２２．１２　「仕事や課題に本気で取り組む」という意をもつ例

　「仕事や課題に本気で取り組む」という意をもつ日本語の慣用句として「腕まくりする」、「ふんどしを締めてかかる」、「本腰を入れる」、「身を入れる」などがある。
　一方、英語には「buckle down to something」、「gird (up) one’s loin」、「pull one’s socks up」」（《英》の表現）、「pull oneself together、「put one’s back to [into] it [something]」、「put [set] one’s hand to the plow」、「put one’s shoulder to the wheel」、「roll up one’s sleeve」などがある。このうち、日本語の「腕まくりする」と「roll up one’s sleeve」、「ふんどしを締めてかかる」と「gird (up) one’s loin」が似たような表現になっている。

　（１）　腕まくりする

　（例文１）　If you intended to complete that report in time, you’d better roll up your sleeves and get to work on it.（そのレポートを期限内に書き上げたいのなら、腕まくりして取りかからなきゃだめだよ）

　（２）　ふんどしを締めてかかる

　（例文１）　“Never mind. Rise above. Watch me: I’m a past master at it. Gird up your loins, dear, such as they are.”（「気にするな。上にあがるんだ。おれを見ろ。おれはそれの達人なんだ。さあ、ふんどしを緊めてかかるんだ、大したふんどしでもないがね」）

　（例文１）　Finals are only two weeks off. I’ve really got to start putting my shoulder to the wheel.（期末試験までたった２週間、本腰を入れてかからなくては）
　（例文２）　After her teacher warned her that she might fail, Sue began to buckle down to her studies.（先生が落第するかもしれないと注意してからスーは本腰を入れて勉強にとりかかった）
