Now Bapak says that the nafsu caused by human force is mutmainah .

First from the description of the Koran.

The fourth nafsu is called in spiritual language mutmainah, and its light is white.

The fourth life force is that which properly belongs to man, and is called "djasmaniah".
When this force prevails in the inner being of man, he will have the character "mutmainah", as it is called in Arabic, which means that he is able to act as a man should, to be sincere and to be willing to help his fellow living creatures.
He feels compassionate towards his fellow men.

Only, he still thinks very highly of his particular gift, his intellectual powers and their excellence, so that he does not believe in the existence of God, but only in himself, and in his cleverness, and thus becomes his own God.
In other words, he regards himself as God and does not consider that there is a God.
He considers himself as God and refuses to believe that he has been created by God.

March 5, 1963 - Bapak
The fourth passion is jatmika.
The meaning of jatmika is the passion that accepts everything.
(Note: Jatmika is an adjective in Indonesian language that expresses a polite and elegant state.
Here it seems to be used instead of Mutmainah derived from Arabic. )
It means [staying] simple and not wanting strange things.
On the contrary, you want to be at peace; you want a life that is peaceful and conscious.
You also want to hear kind words that bring peace to one's heart.
You also remember to worship God and are aware that your life in this world must have been given to you ? that is, by Almighty God.

So this passion is indeed better than the three just mentioned because, although it is a passion, it remembers the truth and remembers the absolute obligation of human beings to worship the One God.
However, this fourth passion that is very good for you has very little influence on your inner feeling, because the three passions mentioned earlier always overtake it and get to you first.

13 SEPT 1963 - Bapak
The Indonesian word for the fourth desire is mutmainah.
When this desire motivates a person, it causes them to have a gentle character, to surrender, to accept whatever ? [section missing] [befalls them. They will also remember that there is an Almighty God.]

Although the fourth desire, mutmainah, is a good desire because it causes human beings to feel patient, to feel peaceful and to accept what it is their right to receive, it is still a desire moved by the heart and thinking, and also manipulated by the low forces within them.

But with this desire people will become good, because they can feel that their true responsibility in life - apart from providing food and whatever they need for their life in this world - is to worship God and to find a good path for understanding the continuation of their life beyond this life.

December 5, 1970 - Bapak
・・・and the nafsu arising from the ordinary human life force is mutmainah.

If you lived without the nafsu mutmainah, a man would not feel attracted to a woman, nor a woman to a man, and then you could not fulfill your function in life of bringing into the world other human beings.

August 23, 1971 - Bapak
After man and woman have united, the nafsu mutmainah manifests in them both.
This is the nafsu appropriate to man, a being who can be aware and understand that he is the highest creature living in this world, that is to say a human being who is able to receive God's gift which encompasses you inwardly and outwardly.
Thus the nafsu mutmainah, although called a nafsu, is an especially good one, a holy one.
It is the nafsu of the human level, and in wayang legend was possessed by Puntadewa or Widjokangko.

As Bapak said before, the union of husband and wife is a receiving or a kind of latihan.
So the men who are already married perform a life latihan when they unite with their wives.
Don't feel or accept that the characteristic of the union of husband and wife is pleasure.
That will preclude finding the right way.

The union between husband and wife is a life latihan to enable you to really have the nafsu called mutmainah.
And the union of the sexes makes worship of God easy for you.
Your feelings become pure, you have compassion and pity for your fellows.
When you are able to be like that, others will have compassion for you in return, and you will be loved by everyone you meet.
A person of that sort is highly esteemed in the world.

For that reason, don't believe and feel that the union of husband and wife is a means of gratification.
Feel it as a way to know life, a way whereby you can have the nafsu mutmainah.

October 13, 1976 - Bapak
There are the nafsu alwamah, amarah, supiah and mutmainah.
The nafsu mutmainah is the best of them; that is, the best of the karep, so that although it can be called karep, it is free from self interest.
(Note: It is Mutmainah, the only nafsu which is not so egoistic.)

August, 13 1977 - Bapak
So supposing we become rich and make a lot of money - we will remember to help the poor, we will remember to give instruction to those who are not as intelligent as ourselves.
We will remember to look after the needs of our fellow human beings.
And this is what is known as the nafsu Mutmainah: that is, the nafsu that is truly good and likes to live in harmony with the rest of society and to share whatever it has with others.

April 23, 1981 - Bapak
But the nafsu which repents, and which is called the nafsu mutmainah, and which is honest and just in everything, is one which is very seldom used or possessed.

June 18, 1981 - Bapak
It is only the nafsu mutmainah which is the nafsu that is simple, and is honest, that can accept.
How many people have this nafsu mutmainah, how many people are there who can accept, who can be honest, and who can, if they have $10,000 and if someone asks for it, give it?
This is the nafsu mutmainah.
That is all very well if everyone around you is also under the influence of the nafsu mutmainah.

June 9, 1985 - Bapak
That is already difficult enough, but there is still more to come, because there are four of these nafsu: amarah, aluamah, supiah and mutmainah.

Now we come to the nafsu mutmainah, which manifests in the relationships which you are always forming with your fellow human beings.

For if you did not form relationships with your fellow human beings, how could you run the country and how could you run your lives?
That is the roh jasmaniah, the ordinary human life force.

June 24, 1985 - Bapak
The fourth kind of nafsu is the nafsu mutmainah, which is the nafsu that wants to understand, which likes to understand the reasons for things, to weight up problems, which is the right way, which is the wrong way, which is good and bad, and so forth.

Man and woman
Then we come to the human life force, roh jasmani, which gives rise to the nafsu mutmainah.
And this comes from, or is expressed by, the relationship between husband and wife, or man and woman - the interaction of men and women.

Now, again, you can try to get rid of that, but the result of ignoring or putting aside the relationship between man and woman is that you will have no human beings at all, because it is through that relationship that you create human beings.

But once again, you have to be choosy, you have to match the right man and the right woman.
In other words, a good man should try to find a suitable or correspondingly good woman, because whatever is within a couple is shared.

So if a man with a pure jiwa marries a woman who is not at all pure, he will get half of whatever her impurity is.
And similarly, if a pure woman marries a man who is not pure, she will get half of whatever problems or mistakes are within him.
That is what is meant when it is said that they become one.
They share everything.

As it is said here, the wife will follow him to heaven, but if he goes to hell, she will be dragged down with him.
They have no choice but to stick to each other.
It is clear that the choice of partner is very important.

Now, supposing you have made the wrong choice.
Supposing you don't have a partner you get on with, or you feel it's wrong.
What do you do then?
You turn to God, because it is God who can change, who can improve and change and repair things which are broken or don't fit.

But people don't understand this,people in Subud after they are opened, very often they immediately say, 'Oh my God, I now realize I've got the wrong wife.
I'd better go and look for the right one.'
They don't understand that they are at the beginning.
That from there on they have to work, they have to improve the situation they are in.

So it is clear that man alone is incomplete.
To be complete, man needs woman, or woman needs man.
But to be really complete, they also need a child.

So in fact, a couple without a child is incomplete.
In fact, it is only by having a child that they can understand and experience how they themselves were created, that they can witness and experience the creation of life.(Note 2)

And the nafsu mutmainah is based on man's need to have contact with, and to have relationships with his fellow human beings; this nafsu is based in particular on the relationship between man and woman.

Well speaking about jasmani is difficult.
That is ourselves, and it does not seem to tell or understand what we are external to, as you can see by eye.
It is exactly the same thing as saying that you do not know well the faults of yourself, although you understand the faults of others exactly.

So, as a composition of Susila Budhi Dharma's book the chapter of human power is divided into two largely unlike other chapters.
One is a description about the influence of various forces on humans as before.
And the other part is about the development of Latihan and the state to be reached as a person.

That is why in this chapter we will describe "various forces", "various forces and nafsu ", and so on, and this will describe the "development of Latihan" specially written in this chapter .
Below is a summary of the items described in the human force chapter about the influence of human force on humans.


Explanation of human force, sexual combination of sexes and the influence it has on people. (Note 1)

The work of human force gives a broad sense and understanding of things on the earth.
The influence of human force is caused by sexual combination.
Sexual bonding is also a contact and binding of Jiwa and Jiwa.
It is also the result of the action of human force to produce children.

The way a soul enters a being, and the kind of soul that enters, depend on what happened before the being (Human seed ?) was created and on how it was created.
This - Bapak says frankly - has to do with the union between a man and a woman.
In most cases, the union between a man and a woman is motivated by an energy that is an accumulation of the atmosphere they have experienced in this world.
This (sexual union) becomes a lens within ( what will become ) the visible being (seed), which awakens ( and attracts ) whatever soul has the opportunity to enter it.

Moreover, the new seed can become a target for the entry of the force of the ordinary human level when the husband and the wife have characters that are self-important, believing that their powers are the result of their own superiority.
Such people do not feel and recognize that they exist in this world because God has created them.
In reality such people only worship themselves and not God's greatness.

July 8, 1970 - Bapak
Now the fourth life force, the djasmani life force, the life force of man, of the human being.
When that works in the human self, it manifests as the nafsu called mutmainah.
Similarly with the animal, similarly with the human life forces.

Were you not influenced by the djasmani life force, you would be the only person in the world; there would be no one else.
If so, you would be complete in yourself.
Of course, God's Will is that man should live in this world together with the lower life forces, those below his own level - the material, vegetable, animal and ordinary human life forces.

November 26, 1972 - Bapak
Then there is another nafsu that is also close to you; the nafsu mutmainah.
This arises from the jasmaniah life force, the human life force.
You need this nafsu that comes from the jasmaniah life force, and you need to use it, for this is really the energy for life, the energy for being able to hand life on; for marrying, that is.
Suppose you ask whether an unmarried man is less energetic about earning a living and securing to himself all the things that make for well-being and a sufficiency in this world, well, yes, he too can do this, he has the urge to do it, but he does not feel it so strongly.
It is indeed decreed by God that people should marry, for human marriage is a union.
And you need to learn and to practice an awareness of the nature of this union between men and women, so that you can really feel this oneness. (Note 2)

It is important for you in the first place so that you can understand; you will not be able to understand the heart of other people until you can understand the heart of your own wife.
This is why these nafsu are important for you, brothers.
Thus by means of this nafsu called mutmainah people such as yourselves can come to obtain
and to be able to feel oneness in your lives; if you have been able to feel oneness between two people, you can more or less be aware of what cause brought you into existence here. (Note 2)

Since it was that, it is the same as your existence.
Now it remains for you to feel your relation to the future existence of the children who will arise from you. (Note 2)
Like that.

Thus it is clear brothers, as Bapak has said, that in reality, that knowledge is already there in your own selves.
There is no need to go looking for it all over the place.
It is enough with your own wife if you are able to feel it.
If you cannot feel it, in Subud you eventually will; and in all the rest too.

April 24, 1984 - Bapak

Higher than that is the jasmani life-force.
These are the life forces of your physical bodies.
Why and how can they influence your heart and mind?
Through meeting people.
If you associate with people who are religious, and who are good, you also will become religious and good.

But if you associate with people who, for example, like to steal, then you too will get to like stealing.
This is why it is enjoined that people should meet one another in such a way as to bring about harmony, so that they can follow what has been laid down by religion for example, shahadat, ( confession of faith ), solat ( prayers ), fasting, zakat-fitroh ( almsgiving ), and the haji ( pilgrimage ).

January 19, 1985 - Bapak
In religion, brothers and sisters, it is said that we can carry out the shariat and tarekat, but we can do nothing about the hakekat, for that is something only God can do. (Note 3)

Hakehat means Kodrat, what is decreed by God.
When this roh khewaniah, the animal life-force, manifests in the human self it is called the nafsu supiyah, desire; higher than that, above that, wider than that, is the jasmaniah or human life-force.

How then does this jasmaniah force enter into human beings?
People can eat animals and plants, and can use materials, to make things to wear or to use, but when it comes to the human force, how does that enter them?
(Note: Material force, vegetable force, animal force go into people when doing that or at that time.)

This is why it is necessary and is required for human beings to have sexual intercourse and to have their mates.
These human beings should take as their mate another human being of good character.
Of course intercourse is sharper and quicker in its appeal to people than is learning.
(Note: Human force of a heterosexual partner enters inside from outside with sex acts, it mixes with the human force that the person had in advance.)

That is the highest, brothers and sisters; the roh jasmani, the human life-force, is the highest for human beings and indeed this is the one appropriate to them.

On a level higher than that one can leave the world.
That is, the roh rohani: the level of human beings who are already free from the influence of their minds and the influence of the nafsu.

9 Jun 1985 - Bapak
That is already difficult enough, but there is still more to come, because there are four of these nafsu: amarah, aluamah, supiah and mutmainah.
Now we come to the nafsu mutmainah, which manifests in the relationships which you are always forming with your fellow human beings.

This is an even greater temptation for man.
The temptation of this life force comes through the interaction of the two sexes.
This is a great temptation, and if man does not get this right, then the results for him are very serious.
For example, if a man restricts the freedom of his wife or somehow harms her, then this has very serious consequences for him.
And similarly if the wife restricts the freedom of her husband or harms him, this has very serious consequences for her.

Why does Bapak say the consequences of this are serious?
Because out of the relationship of man and woman is created a human seed, and a human seed created out of a relationship full of quarrelling, full of discord and lack of love is a human seed that will not have a good quality.
It will be a child who does not respect his parents and who does not like to follow the wishes of his parents.

June 24, 1985 - Bapak
Man and woman

Then we come to the human life force, roh jasmani, which gives rise to the nafsu mutmainah.
And this comes from, or is expressed by, the relationship between husband and wife, or man and woman - the interaction of men and women.

Here, Bapak speaks as if there is heaven and hell besides the seven worlds.
However, it seems that there is nothing more than the meaning of "It is a commonly used word and it is easy to understand".
Bapak only says that there are seven life worlds assumed by him.
And Bapak does not say that there are heaven and hell worlds in addition to that.

Bapak's "seven heavens" (seven-layer world) does not come with the name of heaven nor the name of hell.
As it seems, this seems to refer to somewhere in the seven worlds.

Then you can see that heaven is the world beyond Jasmani.

Well then, where is hell?
So, that is "We do not need to say".

By looking at the talks on the four forces or the four vitality, it is understood that the successor of Bapak has neither explained nor commented on the four life force at all.

Well, our association is unique compared to other organizations, its characteristics will be Latihan and then the world view of nine life forces.

However there are an important life forces but she does not tell us anything about the four vitality those are directly linked to our life in this world.

Well, can we say that the successor of Bapak like that accurately conveys Bapak's argument?
There seems to be a very big question in there.

Contact with each other's inner feeling by sexual unity, or contact with each other's Jiwa , this seems to be like the basic force of human body structure rather than the action of human force.
As it is so, no matter where the person's level of jiwa is, sexual union seems to cause internal contact in a form accompanying physical contact with the partner.

On the other hand, it is supposed to be Jiwa's level of that person apart from that.
The four nafsu which I have mentioned so far are those possessed by all person, but depending on which nafsu is mainly used, which life force dominated.
So we can see where Jiwa's level of that person is.

As a different story from the level of Jiwa like this, a mixture of each other's inner feeling through sexual union, and a series of events such as pregnancy and birth of children occurred.
It is understood that it is due to the action and work that the human body has.

Even so, it is good to refer to its work as "human force".
