These tough, dried-up men moved restlessly up the coast 
and  down.  Some of them stayed on grants as large as 
principalities,  given to  them by Spanish kings who had 
not the faintest idea of the gift.  These first owners lived 
in poor feudal settlements, and their cattle ranged freely 
and multiplied.  Periodically the owners killed the cattle
for their hides and tallow and left the meat to the vultures 
and coyotes.

これらの頑強で、精神的に干しあがった人たちは落ち着
きがよくなく、西海岸沿いを南へ北へと移動を重ねた．
彼らの中には助成金を得て、公国ほどの広さの土地に

だなどという考えは微塵もなかったのであるが．
最初の土地の所有者は、貧しく時代遅れの入植地に定住し
牛を自由に放牧し、増やした．定期的にオーナーたちは、
獣脂や、皮革を得るため牛を屠殺し、残りの肉は、ハゲ
タカやコヨーテに残してやった．
