カンボジアでは昨日総選挙が行われたらしい。
しかし、その裏では政府に批判的なジャーナリスト達が酷い目に遭ってるとか何とか・・・。

この論説を書いてきたのは、Sophal Ear 氏と John A. Hall 氏。
両方とも米の大学やら何やらで勤務してる人らしいが・・・。

この論説の前半で両氏は、カンボジアでジャーナリストの Khim Sambor 氏が殺害された（注）背景を紹介している。
その後、カンボジアの政治に関する歴史（特に1990年代のやつ）やジャーナリストへの暴力件数の推移についても触れているが、面倒なので省略。
で、後半では、昨日行われた選挙の分析もやっている。
その上で、最後に Ear 氏と Hall 氏は、カンボジアでの行政・司法・立法とメディアが置かれてる状況を論じている。

These are virtually nonexistent in Cambodia.

Cambodians know all too well the Chinese adage: "Kill the chicken to scare the monkey."
Now, the Fourth Estate is under fire.
All of the country's television stations are pro-government, while the number of independent radio stations has dwindled to two.

Supporting a free press in Cambodia has never been more critical.

厄介なのは、こういう動きを支持する（せざるを得ない）人達が少なからずいる点だろうか。
こうした人達がいる以上、言論封殺を止めるのも楽じゃないんだろうな。
ついでに、言論封殺が行われてる状況を望む人達が国内外にいることも、カンボジアにおけるジャーナリスト達の活動に悪影響を与えているのかもな。
特に厄介なのは、カンボジア政府の方針を支持する国外の人達なわけで・・・。
