 Benjamin Franklin,an American scientist and statesman,
was born in Boston,Massachusetts,on January 17,1706.
He left school early because he had to work.
He found work as an apprentice in a printing-shop.
By the time he was twenty-four,he had become the owner and editor of the
Pennsylvania Gazette.
In a short time this paper achieved the largest circulation in the American
colonies because of Franklin's industry,common-sense policies,
and well-written editorial essays.
He also took an interest in science and conducted various scientific experiments
including the famous kite experiment which proved the identity of lightning and
electricity.
At one time during his adventurous life,he thought of devoting his life to science.
During his career as a statesman,he served on many political committees,
including the one to draft the Declaration of Independence.
In 1776 he was sent to France to secure a treaty of alliance with France,
and remained there for nine years.
Because of his witty conversation and rational philosophy he became popular,
and thus they aided the American cause.
He was always influential in working out vital policies of the nation regardless
of his personal interests.
He worked for the adoption of the American Constitution in spite of his partial
disagreement with it.
He was one of the greatest personalities of the eighteenth century,
and the first American to become widely known abroad.
