Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's ruling

bloc has scored a firm win in a

general election, gaining impetus to

pursue a first-ever amendment to the

pacifist Constitution.

Abe, however, called for efforts to

win broader support for the revision,

given the rise of a skeptical new

opposition party.

安倍晋三首相率いる与党は総選挙で確固

とした勝利を収め、初の平和憲法改正への

弾みをつけた。

　しかし安倍晋三首相は、改憲に懐疑的な野党

新党の台頭もあり、改憲への支持を広げる

努力を表明した。

縄文の暮らし　想像してみて

　Between 10,000 and 2,500 years ago,　people used stone tools and earthenware.

They lived by catching animals and fish as well as gathering nuts and berries.

This time is known as the Jomon period.

The Okinawa Prefectural Archeological Center in Nishihara town has displays of Jomon

period earthenware, stone implements as well as animal bones and other remains,

which have been discovered in Okinawa.

From the excavated material, let's imagine what life was like during that time.

核廃絶運動にノーベル平和賞

　The International Campaign to

Abolish Nuclear Weapons won the 2017

Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts

toward the adoption of a U.N. treaty

outlawing nuclear weapons.

I CAN has worked with survivors of

the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic

bombings. Japan, however, is not part

of the treaty as it relies on the U.S.

nuclear umbrella.

2017年のノーベル平和賞は、核兵器を禁止

する国際条約の採択に尽力した核兵器廃絶

国際キャンペーン（I CAN＝アイキャン）が受賞した。

　I CAN は、広島、長崎の被爆者と連携してきた。

しかし、米国の核の傘に依存する日本は条約に

参加していない。

私の世界観は日本的
　
　British novelist Kazuo Ishiguro, who was born in Japan,

has won this year's Nobel Prize in literature.

The 62-year-old Ishiguro, who moved to Britain at age 5,

writes only in English but said,"a large part of my way of

looking at the world, my artistic approach, is Japanese,"

because of his Japanese parents.

日本生まれの英国人小説家カズオ・イシグロ氏が

今年のノーベル文学賞を受賞した。

　５歳で渡英したイシグロ氏（６２）は英語のみで執筆するが、

日本人の両親のおかげで「私の世界観、芸術的取り組みの大きな部分

は日本的だ」と話した。

安室さん引退の衝撃

　Pop singer Namie Amuro stunned fans

by announcing her retirement from the

music scene in September next year.

After her debut in 1992 at age 14,

she rose to stardom with a series of

smash hits.

She also became a fashion

phenomenon in the mid-90s, when streets

were filled with young women dressed like her.


ボップ歌手の安室奈美恵さんが来年９月

に音楽界を引退することを表明し、ファン

を驚かせた。

　安室さんは１９９２年に１４歳でデビューし、

大ヒット曲を連発してスターへと駆け上がった。

９０年代半ばには彼女の恰好をまねた若い女性で街がいっぱいになり、

ファッション現象にもなった。
