----  つまり、自分たちは、ただ存在しているだけで、

ほかの人々の命さえも左右することができる、という事実です。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

⑨ But how much more are you, Harvard graduates of 2008, likely to touch other people’s lives? Your intelligence, your capacity for hard work, the education you have earned and received, give you unique status, and unique responsibilities. Even your nationality sets you apart. The great majority of you belong to the world’s only remaining superpower. The way you vote, the way you live, the way you protest,

the pressure you bring to bear on your government, has an impact way beyond your borders.

That is your privilege, and your burden.

 

 

 

 

 

けれど、「2008年のハーバード大学卒業生」の皆さん、どのくらいあなたたちは、他の人の生命に関わろうとしていますか？　皆さんの知性、一生懸命な仕事能力、授けられた教育、それらは、皆さんに、唯一無二の　ステータス　を与え、他にはない責任を与えていると言ってよいでしょう。　たとえ国籍が違っても、皆さんの多くは、世界でも　比類なき 「スーパーパワー」 に属しているのです。　皆さんが投票すること、生きること、抗議すること、政府に与える圧力――　これらは、皆さんを隔てる国境を超えるインパクトを持つのです。　

それが　皆さんの特権であり、同時に皆さんの重荷でもあります。

 

 

 

 

 

 

If you choose to use your status and influence

to raise your voice on behalf of those who have no voice;

if you choose to identify

not only with the powerful, but with the powerless;

if you retain the ability to imagine yourself

into the lives of those who do not have your advantages,

 

then it will not only be your proud families who celebrate your existence, but thousands and millions of people whose reality you have helped change.

それは、家族だけでなく、あなたのおかげで、生活の現実を変えてもらったという人々、

恩恵を受けた無数の人たちにとって、皆さんの存在が意味を持つことになるのです。

 

 

 We do not need magic to change the world, we carry all the power we need inside ourselves already: we have the power to imagine better.

 

 

 私たちは、何も世界を変える魔法を持つ必要はありません。　

私たちは、自分の内部に既に、パワーを　全て持っているのです。
