２２．７ 「何の効き目もない」という意をもつ例
微妙な違いはあるが、[ある働きかけが何の効き目もないか、あるいはまともに受け入れられないこと」を記述する日本語の表現として、「馬の耳に念仏」、「カエルの面の小便［水］」、「豆腐にかすがい」、「どこ吹く風」、「糠に釘」、「のれんに腕押し」、「馬耳東風」、「右の耳から左の耳」、「柳に風」などが挙げられる。
一方、英語にも「fall on deaf ears」、「go in one ear and out the other」、「like beating the air」、「like plowing the sand(s)」、「like talking to a (brick, stone) wall」、「like talking to the air」、「like talking [preaching] to [into] the wind」、「turn a deaf ear (to something)」、「like water off a duck’s back」などがある。日本語の「カエルの面の小便［水］」と英語の「like water off a duck’s back」、日本語の「右の耳から左の耳」と英語の「go in one ear and out the other」の発想に類似性が感じられる。
（１） 馬の耳に念仏
