HOWARD JONES "IN THE RUNNING"

今日はマイ・フェイバリット・ピアノマン、ハワード・ジョーンズの１９９２年のアルバム、『イン・ザ・ランニング』です。

とりあえず、スラッグさんは置いといてですね、わたしにとってピアノマンといったら、ビリー・ジョエルが最初にいて、次はもろに「ハワード・ジョーンズ」。
こりゃもう、世代的には避けては通れない。
例えばエルトン・ジョンやスティーヴィーだったり、デヴィッド・フォスターがどんなにすごかろうと、ハワード・ジョーンズ世代なんでござるよ。
一番好きだったのは「パールと貝殻」！！！！！



さてさて、『イン・ザ・ランニング』が出たとき。
そのころ大学生だったワタクシは、生活費と学費は親の仕送りと奨学金でなんとかし、高校時代からの延長である某和食系ファミレス サ○ミ　でのバイト代はすべてＣＤと本につぎ込んでました。
８４年から８７年まで４年連続で来日コンサートを行っていたハワード・ジョーンズですが、
もしわたしがもう少し早く生まれていたら、バイト代をきっとコンサート代にあててたでしょう。

こういうイメージだと思うのですが、

まあ９２年くらいはテクノポップからはそうとう離れて、ぐっと落ち着いた感じになっています。

そりゃそうです。ハワード・ジョーンズは下積みが長くて、世に出た時すでに２８歳。いつまでも髪の毛ピョンピョン、シンセでノリノリっていうのも不自然だよね。


地味ですが（そしてあんまり売れてないと思うけども）いいアルバムだと思います。
（そしてわたしにとっては、９０年代に入って最初にクレジット欄にSteve Farrisの名前を発見した記念すべきアルバムでもありました。まあそれは別の話。）
アダルト・コンテンポラリー、良質なフュージョン・ポップが心地いいです。

アルバムの中で一番好きな曲です。
歌詞はちょっと救いがないというか、悲しい内容ですが、美しい曲です。
音符の上下っぷりとかはGun Turned On The Worldみたいなものが好きなのですが、
そうですねえ、なんちゅーか、ポップスってのは歌がまず第一なんだろうな、って改めて認識いたします。
素敵な曲です。
