第二十三弾: Adam Green + the Jeffrey Lewis band ライブ ＠ Bowery Ballroom
Eccentric and stoned, Adam Green. Sometimes referred to as the "the quirky New Yorker". I didn't know anything about this dude till my friend, Julia, asked if I wanted to go see his gig. It's the first time I went to see an artist that I didn't know (in New York), but it was worth it.
エキセントリックかつ常にドラッグでぼうっとしてる人。Adam Greenってのはそんな人。「奇抜（イロモノ）なニューヨーカー」とか呼ばれることもある。実はこのライヴに行くまで彼の事は全く知らなかった。友達のジュリアに「観にいかない」って誘われて初めてその存在を知った。ニューヨークで知らないアーティストのライヴを観に行ったのは初めてだけどこれは当たりライヴだった。
Prior to the gig, I found this poster on every stop light and parking meter near our apartment.
近所の信号機やパーキングメーターにこのポスターが貼られてた。
Sean Lennon was at the gig as an audience. Apparently he was standing right behind us. Julia noticed and she told me but I didnt even know he existed. Yes, I didn't know John Lennon had a kid. I was like, "Sean who?".
ジョン・レノンの息子、ショーン・レノンが客として来ていた。前座バンド演奏後、俺達の真後ろに立っていたらしい。実はジョン・レノンに子供がいただなんてこれっぽっちも知らなかった人のリアクション：
ジュリア「ねえねえ、私達の後ろにいるのショーン・レノンじゃない？」
俺「ショーン…誰？」
This was the 4th gig I went to within a week. I can't even imagine what it's like to go on a three-day Fuji Rock tour.
一週間に四つのライヴは流石に疲れた。でもまあフジロック三日間キャンプとかに比べたらどうって事ないんだろうけど。どちらにしても楽しいから無問題。
This is one of the opening act bands: the Jeffrey Lewis Band. These guys were pretty entertaining.
前座バンドの一つ、the Jeffrey Lewis Band。コイツらもまたある意味イロモノで見てて楽しかった。

These guys are basically anti-folk like Adam Green, but with a more punk approach.
Adam Green と同じアンチ・フォーク系のバンド、ただもっとパンクな感じ。
They played this one song - "The History Of Punk on the Lower East Side, 1950-1975" - which was awesome. They follow the development of Punk rock by explaining and playing songs by punk bands that were around the Lower East Side of Manhattan between 1950-1975. They do it really quickly, and yet the entire song is about 10 minutes long.
「ロウアーイーストサイドにおけるパンクの歴史1950-1975」という曲が凄かった。曲と呼べるかどうかはわからないけど。マンハッタン東南部のパンクロックヒストリーをテーマにした曲で、様々なパンクバンドの説明とそのバンドの曲をちょっと演奏するというモノ。かなりスピーディーに演奏してたけどそれでも10分近くあった。ちなみにこの曲は彼らのオリジナルコミックに付属していたボーナスCDに収録されているらしい。
They have honest and straight-forward titles for their songs and albums like, "The Last Time I Did Acid I Went Insane".
とても正直でストレートなアルバム・曲タイトルを好む人たちっぽい。「こないだアシッドやったらイッちゃった」とか。

The story-telling nature of some of their songs reminded me of Logan Whitehurst's solo stuff. Logan Whithurst also draws his own comics like these guys. Here's an example of a Logan-esque song. It's about the life story of a creeping brain. They had a slide show of their original comic syncronized with the song.
彼らのストーリー語り系ソングはローガン・ホワイトハーストのソロにかなり似てると思う。この足が生えて自我が芽生えた脳みその一生についての曲とかローガンっぽい。自分らが描いたコミックが曲に合わせて後ろのスクリーンに映し出されてた。面白い事にローガンも自作コミックを描く。
This song, also with original comic to go with it, was titled "The Complete History of Communist China Part 4". Some of the stuff, I vaguely remember learning in history class.
これも自作コミックを見せながら演奏してた。タイトルは「中国における共産主義の歴史、完全版パート4」。内容はタイトル通り。
So here's Adam Green. He's quite popular in Germany of all places, which I have a hard time understanding. Adam Green hardly seems like an artist that German people will be into. But then again, what do I know, I've only been to Germany twice.
そしてこちらがAdam Green。何故かドイツで人気があるらしい。とてもドイツ人にウケるようなアーティストとは思えないんだけど。
The moment he comes on stage, he almost falls over. He was totally and obviously stoned. He was like that for the entire gig.
ステージに現れてすぐ転びそうになる。立ってられないほど酔ってた／クスリでハイになってた。ライヴ中ずっとそんな感じだった。
He was one of the the openers for The Strokes at one time. He really looks and acts like Julian Casablancas. In fact Adam Green stated in an interview:
"Most times when people stop me, they think I'm Ben Kweller or Julian Casablancas," Green says, laughing. "I got a free meal the other day because the restaurant people thought I was Julian."
一時期ストロークスの前座をやっていたらしい。そもそもAdam Greenは見た目も性格もストロークスのジュリアン・カサブランカスそっくり。インタビューにてこんな発言も：
「誰かが俺の事を呼び止める時ほとんどの場合ベン・クェラーかジュリアン・カサブランカスと勘違いしてるんだ。こないだなんかレストランでタダ飯食わせてもらったよ、ジュリアンだと思われてね。」
It was a strangely "Liberal" gig.
Btw, one of the band members was clad in a Chinese communist uniform with the green hat and red star and all.
随分リベラルなライヴだったと思う。自由というか好き勝手やっていたという印象があったけど。

I found Adam Green's style somewhat similar to Jens Lekman and Devendra Banhart. Devendra Banhart is in the same genre as Adam Green. Jens Lekman's "When I Said I Wanted To Be Your Dog" (which I posted a review for a while ago) has a similar vibe to Adam Green's latest album.

He kept on saying that his mic stand is "so fallic" and "nicely lubricated". Then he called out to the audience: "You guys are here to get laid right? I saw some boners in the audience". He was also talking about how he loves steroids and how "Steroids make me feel good". At one point he proclaimed, "I'll do anything for white people man".
Jeffrey Lewisの事をずっとJeffrey Jewish(ユダヤ教)と間違えて呼んでいた。あと何人かの客を「トルコ野郎」「モンゴル野郎」あと「ファッキン金髪野郎」とか呼んでた。彼によるとマイクスタンドは非常に「卑猥な形」らしい。それで観客に「今夜このライブに来たのは後でヤるためだろう？」と聞く。そんでもって「ステロイドは大好きだ。気持ちよくなれる」とも言ってた。更に「白人の為ならなんでもしてやる」と仰っていた。
His shirt acted as a meter that refelcted the audience's behavior:
Positive reaction - "Thats a good (song) request. Im gonna unbutton my shirt for that"
Negative reaction - "Im gonna have to button up my shirt because you guys are being so rowdy"

He forgot the lyrics to some of the songs: "fuck, I forgot the lyrics, can't do this one". For one of these songs, he started singing Mary Had a Little Lamb to the tune instead. Interestingly, during an interview he once said, "I want to write the next 'Mary Had a Little Lamb'".

He brings on stage this sad guy who was either drunk or high and lets him play guitar. The band and venue staff were really anxious cause the equipment is expensive. He couldn't play for shit, but he was totally into it. A few bouncers came to peel the guitar off of him, but he protested fiercely like a kid. Adam Green made a fake punch move right to his face.
どう見ても酔ってるかハイになってる客をステージに上がらせ、ギターを持たせてしまう。高い機材だからバンドもスタッフもかなりそわそわしてた。結局まともに弾けないからガードマンがギターを取り上げようとしたら凄い勢いで抵抗しだす始末。Adam Greenもその男の顔目掛けて寸止めパンチを放ってた。それにしてもかなり痛い奴だった。
"I got a fuckin million songs man. Im gonna play a million songs tonight". And then he said, "No man, I got about a hundred songs, after that you can't count".

He kept playing songs that the audience requested. The gig actually went on for a very long time - two hours. The band members and the venue workers were pissed (see above photo), as Adam Green said near the end: "everyone's like fuckin annoyed at me because I never finish man". Half the audience had left by the time the gig ended.
