第二十二弾: Mew + Kasabian ライブ ＠ Webster Hall
I went to see Mew, but stayed for Kasabian's performance as well cause everyone was there to see Kasabian and I was curious. Mew's a band from Denmark that mixes heavy drums and loud guitar with dreamy, high-pitched singing.
日本ではお馴染みのMew。へヴィーな音に高音の歌声を乗せるデンマークのバンド。Mewを観にいったんだけど、ついでだから人気があるらしいKasabianのライヴも観た。
Same venue as the night before, but the crowd was of a totally different kind.
Yesterday's audience consisted of: 80%-girls, 10%-gay, 10%-other. Mostly French people.
Today's audience: 70%-middle-aged Brittish men, 20%-middle-aged Brittish women, 10%-other. Mostly drunk Brittish dudes singing football songs.
昨晩と同じ会場でも客の種類が全く異なるのがオモシロい。
昨日の客層：8割り女の子。1割りゲイ。残りその他。フランス人多数。
今日の客層：7割り中年イギリス男、2割りイギリスおばさん。残りその他。酔っ払ってサッカーソング歌いだす典型的イギリス人多数。
As you might have guessed from the population study above, pretty much everyone was there to see Kasabian. This was a sold out gig thanks to them. I remember listening to their debut album at Tower Records when it came out, and not really liking them at all. But, seems like they've gotten big.
客層を見ればわかるだろうけどほぼ全員Kasabian目当て。彼らのおかげでこのライヴのチケットは売り切れ。デビューアルバムが出た当時タワレコで試曲して、「イラネ」って思ったのは覚えてるけど、いつのまにこんなビッグに。
NME describes Mew's "and the Glass Handed Kites" as, "cocteau twins meet sonic youth", which I think isn't such a bad analogy. After hearing them live I like that album even more. It's a very well made album.
Btw, J.Mascis from Dinosaur Jr. has helped out on that record.
NMEがアルバム"and the Glass Handed Kites"を「cocteau twinsとsonic youthの融合」と表現していたけど、悪くない例えだと思う。ライヴを聞いたら更にこのアルバムが好きになった。良く出来たアルバムだと思う。
ちなみに"Glass Handed Kites"にはDinosaur Jr.のJ.Mascisが参加してる。
They come on stage, announced: "hi we're Mew", and then quickly started playing. Gotta love their stoicism.
さっさと出てきたかと思ったら「やあ僕らMew」だけ言ってすぐに演奏開始。ストイックだねぇ。
.....that's a......mustache..... it seems kind of....odd..... I wasn't.. exactly.... expecting a mustache from the members of this band......

これは…ちょっと予想外だよこのヒゲは。
And yes, for the grand finale they played Comforting Sounds as usual. I wanted to hear that song live ever since I saw the live footage of it. The members of the band go off stage once and then gradually come back one by one to finish off the long song.
やはりフィナーレはComforting Sounds。この曲はライヴで聴きたかったんだよなー。バンドメンバーが一旦ステージから去り、一人づつ戻ってきて曲の後半を演奏する素敵演出も良かった。ヒゲ。
Overall I'm satisfied with the setlist. I saw their name listed under the bands playing for 2006 CMJ Music Marathon New York, but I doubt they're coming back here.
セットリストもなかなか良かったので満足。ところでMewの名前が2006ミュージックマラソンNew Yorkの出演バンドリストに載ってたけど、戻ってくるのだろうか。戻ってこないとは思うんだけど。ヒゲ。
Here's the main act, Kasabian. Extremely popular. I didn't know they had that many fans. And they rocked the crowd like nothing I've seen before. The whole venue was literally shaking from the crazed hype.
こちらがメインのKasabian。なんかね、もうこれでもかってぐらい人気ありまくりなんですけど。熱狂的ファンかなり多い。しかも今まで見たこと無いぐらい客もバンドも超ノッてるし。クソ盛り上がりまくり。ホールが揺さぶられてたよ。
The Kasabian frontman likes to move around a lot on stage, making weird poses. He also does the Liam Gallagher pose - singing while slightly crouching with one hand behind his hip.
After the gig, the people in the front row yelled out at the venue staff on stage: "Setlist please! Can I have setlist please!". Never seen that happen before.
フロントマンは常にステージ上を動きまわり、奇妙なポーズをとる愉快な人だった。オアシスのリアム・ギャラガー立ちまでも会得していた。あのポーズは絶対腰にくると思うのだが。
Speaking of Oasis, people outside the venue were handing out Mew and Oasis stickers. I guess Oasis fans and Kasabian fans overlap.
ライヴホールの外ではOasisとMewのスティッカーを配ってる人達が待ち構えていた。やはりOasisとKasabianのファンは被るのだろうか。
