Tip of the Week No.255 'dizzying'

Hello,

This time it's Jocelyn writing the latest blog post!

I thought I'd write about 'dizzying'.
When you are 'dizzy' it is when you feel that the room is spinning, you are weak and faint.
Usually it is related to an illness or physical problem, you might tell your doctor that you feel dizzy.
We would say "I feel dizzy" and the doctor would know how you feel.

dizzying adj.
causing someone to feel unsteady, confused or amazed

'Dizzying' is related to a situation causing you to feel the emotions above. You might not actually feel 'dizzy' physically.

There were a dizzying amount of features on her new TV.

The British Library contains a dizzying 170-200 million books and other items from many countries.

There are a dizzying amount of kanji to learn for a new learner of Japanese!

Tip of the Week No.254 'white noise'

今回紹介する単語は white noise。
直訳すると「白い雑音」
音なのに白い色…意味が想像しにくい。
辞書にはこう載ってありました。


white noise n.
unpleasant noise, like the noise that comes from a television or radio that is turned on but not tuned in

white noise 名詞
周波数が合ってないテレビやラジオから出る心地よくない雑音などのこと


意味がわかってもなぜ白なのかは謎ですが…


ホワイトノイズをウィキペディアで調べると、
"よく聞くノイズの例で擬音語で表現するなら、「ザー」という音に聞こえる雑音がピンクノイズで、「シャー」と聞こえる音がホワイトノイズである。"
うーん、ピンクノイズ？余計わからなくなってきました。。
数学でホワイトノイズの定義の式が載っていましたが、阪口はこの分野はすこぶる苦手なのでもうあきらめました。

何かブログのネタになるものないかなと思ってBBCニュースの見出しを見ていると…
日本関連のニュースを発見！

Tokyo Olympic gold medal replaced after first got bitten
噛まれた後、東京オリンピックの金メダルが取り替えられる


見出しとともに、苦労して勝ち取った後藤選手のメダルをあろうことか噛む河村市長の写真。
英語でニュースになってることがとても情けない…。


…まあ英語の話をすると、本当は主語がオリンピックの金メダルなので受け身の意味で was (もしくはまだ取り替えてないから will be) になるはずですが、英語の記事の見出しは特殊な文法になっています。
で、replace という単語はこういう場合に使います。
「取り替える」という意味。

辞書の例文は以下のとおり。

Let's replace these drapes with florals.
このカーテンを花模様のものに取り替えましょう。

The original tires were played out and had to be replaced.
もとのタイヤはすり減ってしまったので取り替えねばならなかった。

英語の記事の特徴で、「同じものを何度も主語として扱わない」というルールがあります。

今日紹介する単語は presumably。
副詞なので必須単語ではありませんが、知っていると差をつけられる単語。


presumably adv.
used to say that you think that something is probably true: Presumably this is where the accident happened. ◇You'll be taking the car, presumably? ◇I couldn't concentrate, presumably because I was so tired.

presumably 副詞
何かがおそらく本当だと思うときに使われる：おそらくここが事故が起こった場所だ。◇おそらく、きみが車を運転するんだよね？◇ぼくは集中できなかったのはおそらく疲れてたからだ。


同意語でいうと probably などにあたります。


Presumably, I have nothing to eat for lunch.

おそらく、昼ごはんに食べるものがない。
