A modern Grand Piano - a Steinway - silent, modest- its exterior shining like black diamonds - plain and yet distinguished - a little jewel, - thus it stands before you.
You lift the top. The plate, iron throughout and cross-stringed, helped Master Henry Engelhard Steinway to achieve his first great success in 1855. A mechanism in scrupulous order and yet bewildering. There is a golden glitter. One divines dormant powers.
Awakening!! - Gently the pianist`s hands move over the ivory keys. He caresses the Grand, makes it chat, sing - clear as a bell it rings - a world comes to life!

The Grand prances and trembles with subdued force, waits to raise its powerful voice. A sonorous bass not l unlike rumbling thunder gives way to sphereal sounds of sweet treble. Bravely competing with the Orchestra of many and various voices it defies the charge of wind- and string-instruments.
Perfection! Highest accomplishment of human knowledge!
The development of our piano has passed through a wearisome state until it became as Grand or as Upright the most popular musical instrument. Step by step its forerunners hard to fight their way through to the primitive hammer piano, as the following pages will divulge in gross outline.
They were chiefly German Piano Makers who had the greatest share in the rapid development of their trade in the nineteenth century, among then especially : H. E. STEINWAY and his sons who, however, attained their greatest success after they had settled in New York. Their inventions gave the piano manufacture of the whole world the decisive tendency. Since the year 1853 four Steinway-Generations have kept up the new way of manufacturing their pianos and by assiduous efforts have brought it to the perfection of to-day.
An illustrated booklet entitled “ Steinway Construction ”shows the most important characteristics in the Steinway Grand and Uprights whereby their commanding position has been secured since many decades. The booklet is free of charge at the disposal of interested parties.
In the year 1867 at the Paris world exhibition - world exhibitions of that kind which rightly merit their name have been few and few and far between, at which all important countries were actually represented by their best accomplishments - Steinway & Sons were distinguished with the first prize, the Gold Medal, from which time the victorious career of the “ Steinway ” was irresistable. More than a quarter of a million Grands and Uprights have left the Steinway factories, in New York as well as in Hamburg and have found buyers in all countries. They are as a comrade indispensable to the most famous pianists, servitable at most Academies of Music and adorning the saloons of large Ocean Steamers.
Three qualities, before all others, have paved the way for the success of the Grand and Uprights of the firm of Steinway & Sons in all parts of the world : Perfect touch, inimitable volume of tone and unsurpassable durability. In spite of their insignificantly higher prices they are the cheapest piano fortes, if durability and length of service are properly taken into account.
Even “ Veterans ”of sixty years` age and more, we come across again now and then, have kept their youthful freshness. The Steinway - tone is unvariable ; it does not know any whims and no aging!
If you cannot find accommodation for a Steinway Concert Grand in your home, you will obtain in our Miniature and Parlour G
rand and Upright Pianos instruments with similar unparalled merits which have decided the pick of international eminent pianists to play exclusively our instruments. These artists are avowed Steinway adherents on the strength of many years' practical experience!
All Steinway Models, Grands and Uprights indifferent sizes which have been designed on a physical and acoustical basis show the same unattainable advantages. They pay homage to our instruments in superabundant superlatives. Hundred of artists` testimonials - written of their own accord and fully convinced - might guide you when purchasing a piano.
Even though the distinguished elegance of our regular cases will satisfy every music lover`s taste as their neutral lines will happily match with any kind of furniture, we have abundant experience in executing pianos from own and given designs, in all conceivable kinds of wood and style, and decorated with precious material. Applications for illustrations of previously supplied splendid instruments are invited. You will also find in this booklet illustrations of few Steinway Grand in designs of historical periods.
