The hiker who leaves a well-marked trail and wanders off, cross-country. The pilot who flied his perfectly maintained plane into the ground. The kayaker who dives into a hydraulic white-water "grinder" even though he's just seen it suck three friends to their doom. When you hear such tales, you think, Gosh, I'd never do something like that. But would you?
Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary: frothy water (as in breakers, rapids, or falls): The canoe got caught in white water.
・Collins Dictionary:
1.a stretch of water with a broken foamy surface, as in rapids: He says people are usually surprised that such good white water rafting exists so close to southern Queensland.
2.light-coloured sea water, esp over shoals or shallows: The tops of the seas were being ripped off by the winds so there was white water all around.
・American Heritage Dictionary: Of, relating to, intended for, or taking place on white water, especially in river rapids: white-water rafting.
