static

女性三人で出かけたDeath Valley National Park, CAで道に迷い、3日間で480km走り、ついにはガソリンも切れてしまいました。Reader's Digest 11月号の記事 HOT THIRSTY LOSTからです。
The women then broke into the big trailer, finding little of use. Next, Gina pried open a window on the smallest trailer, and Jenny crawled inside. There, on a table, was a CB radio. But after hauling it out, along with the antenna, and hooking it up to the car battery, there was only static when Jenny twirled the dial. After ten minutes, the static died out too.
"static" と言うと静電気とか静止した状態が浮かびますが、上の文での意味はそのどちらにも当てはまりません。辞書を見ます。
・Cambridge English Dictionary: noise on a radio or television caused by electricity in the air: There's so much static on this radio I can't hear what they're saying.
・Wiktionary: Interference on a broadcast signal caused by atmospheric disturbances; heard as crackles on radio, or seen as random specks on television.
・V2 Vocabulary Building Dictionary: crackling noise like that of a radio: Tips: Static is derived from the Greek statikos, which means "causing to stand." When referring to movement, change, or growth, static describes things that do not move or change for a long while. It can also be a noun that refers to interference, either the kind on the radio or TV, or the type you may get from someone who is critical of you or your work.
なるほど雑音とか干渉の意味もあるのですね。
