落下傘の降下訓練で仲間の落下傘と衝突し、危うく大怪我をするか死に至る事故にあった後での文です。
Though most people will never face the risk of plummeting to earth in a compromised parachute jump, we all have challenges to overcome. I use the term front-sight focus to describe the incredible concentration and single-minded SEALs tap into when pursuing a target, whether they're aiming a weapon at a terrorist, planning a raid, or methodically working through a mess when things go wrong.
上の引用文の最初に出てくる "compromised parachute jump" の "compromised" は妥協とは別の意味の "compromise" で、数年前に2度（下記）取り上げました。

acrostic puzzles

Reader's Digestは7月号8月号が一つになるので、つまり1ヵ月は実質的に休みだったので、久しぶりに図書館からJuly/August Issueを借りています。
'The one thing I never go on vacation without is ...' と題された記事に初めて見る単語が出てきました。
My acrostic puzzles. They keep my mind occupied and let me relax at the same time.
とりあえず、"acrostic" を辞書で見ます。
・Oxford English Dictionary: A poem, word puzzle, or other composition in which certain letters in each line form a word or words.: I plan to do another blog post, finish the acrostic in the NYT Magazine, and do a bit of walking (with the help of my camera).

・Collins Dictionary: a number of lines of writing, such as a poem, certain letters of which form a word, proverb, etc. A single acrostic is formed by the initial letters of the lines, a double acrostic by the initial and final letters, and a triple acrostic by the initial, middle, and final letters:

後の辞書の説明にある "acrostic" は日本語の文でも時々見かけますね。笑点の問題にもよく出てきます。
パズルの意味での "acrostic" は上の辞書の説明ではいま一つ分かり難いのでGoogle検索で調べると色々と説明するサイトが出てきたので幾つか読みましたが、クロスワードより複雑で私には難しくて出来そうもありません。

abstractedly

George Orwellの小説 1984を読んでいます。
'What happened to the man?' said Winston.

Ah, that I couldn't say, of course. But I wouldn't be altogether surprised if ' Parsons made the motion of aiming a rifle, and clicked his tongue for the explosion.

'Good,' said Syme abstractedly, without looking up from his strip of paper.

"abstract" からは抽象的な（もの）とか要約などの意味しか思い浮かばないので、動詞でも抽象化するとか、要約するを連想します。 "abstractedly" と副詞になるとどの様な意味になるのか分かりません。辞書を見ます。辞書には副詞での説明はないので、形容詞の "abstracted" を見ます。
・Oxford English Dictionary: Showing a lack of concentration on what is happening around one.: She seemed abstracted and unaware of her surroundings.

・Collins Dictionary: Someone who is abstracted is thinking so deeply that they are not fully aware of what is happening around them.: Meg was so abstracted she scarcely noticed that the train had stopped.

・Cambridge English Dictionary: not giving attention to what is happening around you because you are thinking about something else: He gave her an abstracted glance, then returned to his book.
なるほど、何か他の事を考えていてうわの空なのですね。
咳と微熱が2週間以上続き難渋しています。明後日の１０kmランまでに治って欲しい。

palimpsest

George Orwellの小説 1984を読んでいます。主人公のWinston Smithは歴史を記録する役人として日々働いています。
Day by day and almost minute by minute the past was brought up to date. In this way every prediction made by the Party could be shown by documentary evidence to have been correct, nor was any item of news, or any expression of opinion, which conflicted with the needs of the moment, ever allowed to remain on record. All history was a palimpsest, scraped clean and reinscribed exactly as often as was necessary. In no case would it have been possible, once the deed was done, to prove that any falsification had taken place.
歴史を記録する仕事と言っても実際は記録を改ざんしている様子です。"palimpsest" は見慣れない単語なので辞書を見ます。

我が国でも国家の重要な文書がなかったり、なかったはずの文書が出てきたり、さらには改ざんの事実も判明したりして、真実は闇の中というのは実際に多いのですね。

compromising possession

孫と遊ぶのに忙しくブログの更新ができませんでした。
さて、George OrwellのHomage to Cataloniaを読み終わったので、今度は同じ著者の小説1984を読み始めました。
He had given a quick glance up and down the street and then had slipped inside and bought the book for two dollars fifty. At the time he was not conscious of wanting it for any particular purpose. He had
carried it guiltily home in his briefcase. Even with nothing written in it, it was a compromising possession.
"compromise" の言葉からは妥協しか思いつかないのですが、本を買って所有していることが "compromise" とはどんな意味でしょう。

なるほど、政治や有名人だけではなく最近では大手の企業でも隠して置いた悪行が次々と明らかになってきていますが、こういう場合に使える単語ですね。
しかしながら、弁舌さわやかな政治家達は "compromising evidence" が出てきても、ごまかしますね。特に大物は。凡人には真似は出来ないにしても、少なくとも騙されたくはないですね。
