松井稼頭央：報道と語録（第37戦）～崖っぷち松井稼頭央～

　　今メッツファンの3大関心事は、

①なぜPedro Matinezが投げる時、Mike Piazzaはマスクをつけないのか？
②Tom Glavineは峠を越えたか？
③松井稼頭央はいつベンチされるか？

である。当然③に絞って話しを進める。1日前の試合になるが、カーディナルズとの3連戦の2戦目。松井稼頭央は3点タイムリーを放ったが、ブルペンが崩壊し、逆転劇のヒーローになり損ねた。興味深いことに翌日、地元ニューヨーク各紙のスポーツ面に『松井稼頭央』の文字が見出しをにぎわせた。一番驚いたのは、松井稼頭央がニューヨークの地に着いてから、最も松井稼頭央の記事を書き、一回も批判的な記事を書いていないNew York PostのMark Haleが批判的な論調になったことだ。松井秀喜の2年目の成長振りと、松井稼頭央の2年目のこれまでの実績を比較する記事を書いたのである。この記事構成は明らかに松井稼頭央にとってイメージダウンである。

　　Mark Haleに限らず、他の記者も最近しばしば松井秀喜の2年目との比較をし始めている。そのため可愛そうなことに松井稼頭央は、松井秀喜を意識した記者会見を最近している。精神的に参るような嫌がらせに近い記者からの質問が飛び交う中、松井稼頭央の記者に対する回答スタンスは一貫している。

「結果が出てないのでブーイングは理解できる」
「健康な状態で一年プレイしたい」
「大リーグにやってきたことを後悔していない」

　　しかし、New York Postでメッツファンの支持が強いJoel Shermanが「松井稼頭央は2番から8番。次は8番からベンチへ」と書いたのは痛手だ。その日唯一の松井稼頭央援護派は、長年スポーツライターをやっているNew York TimesのGeorge Vecseyだった。松井稼頭央の記者に振り回されない記者会見を賞賛し、「前向けにプレイしようとする選手をそっとしてやれ」と書いている。

　　同僚のメッツ選手たちはCliff Floydを筆頭に、松井稼頭央をサポートしているようだ。しかし何よりも心強いのが、Randolph監督だ。「1ヶ月ちょっとの成績でゴタゴタいうな。一生懸命プレイしている選手をフィールドに出して何が悪い。高額な契約を結んでいるからスタメンに出しているんじゃないかって？フロントからそんな支持は受けていない」とキッパリ。このようなRandolph監督の記者を追い返す対応で完全にチームのコアに戻ってきた選手がいる。Mike Cameronだ。Carlos Beltranの獲得で、記者たちにトレード騒動を起こされたが、Randolph監督は「我がチームのライトだ」とリハビリ中のMike Cameronをキャンプ中守った。松井稼頭央もRandolph監督の救いの手に応えて、期待に応えて欲しい。

"Obviously, I haven't produced results at the plate and the fans will react to that. If I get a hit, they'll cheer like they did today," he said. "I'm not letting it bother me."

"I don't think about the contract," Randolph said. "I'm here to help this team win. If someone comes from upstairs and says something to me, then I react to that. But no one has said anything to me. I react to what I see, what I feel. I just feel like he's going to be fine.

"What's the big rush? What's the big deal? I'm just being straight with you guys," the manager told reporters. "Are you going to give the guy a month and a half and start kicking him to the curb? I don't really understand that. If I see the guy working his butt off every day to get better, if I see that he's hustling, playing hard, I'll show him that I appreciate the effort."

"It's only been a month," Matsui said Wednesday. "In regard to second base as well as offensively, the most important part for me right now is that I haven't gotten hurt. 　That part alone I think is a step forward and is progress being made. There's still a lot more to be done."

"It's only been a month," he said. "There's a lot more baseball to be played. And I think I still have that opportunity to come into form like Hideki did last year. I just don't want to rush things. I just want to stay the course and just play baseball for the remainder of the season."

"He has to be very strong," Floyd said. "So, maybe he'll be better for it when it does turn around for him."
