Toyota Stock Falls After Moody's Downgrades Credit Rating
Toyota, which was stripped of the top Aaa rating last year by Moody's Investors Service, has been downgraded again to Aa2, the third-highest grade. Fitch Ratings announced that it too might downgrade the auto giant's rating after it re-examines the company's creditworthiness in the next few months. (Standard & Poor's is due to examine its credit ratings on Toyota in the middle of May.) "A lower credit rating indicates a higher risk of a default and can raise borrowing costs," Bloomberg reported. "The carmaker has 5.45 trillion yen of bonds and loans coming due through 2012." The downgrade was, for the most part, a result of Toyota's recent recalls, which have affected more than 8 million vehicles. With hundreds of lawsuits in the works, Toyota's profit margins for the next few years are very difficult to predict. "We are deeply disappointed with the Moody's downgrade," Mieko Iwasaki, a Toyota spokesman based in Tokyo, told Bloomberg. "We are doing our utmost in prioritizing our customers' trust with our best management efforts and hope to have our rating raised again." After the announcement from Moody's, Toyota shares dropped 1.4 percent to 3,600 yen. A full-year earnings report is expected on May 11, but the auto giant has predicted a net income of $862 million for the year ended March 31.
