４０　よく似た英語と日本語の慣用句やことわざ

　（１６５）walk on air　　足が地に着かない（続きー４）

　直　　訳　空気の上を歩く
　意　　味　嬉しくて落ち着かない、大喜びする、浮き浮きした心でいる

　「float [tread] on air」の形でも使う。「tread」を使うのは《英》のみ。「walk on air」には日本語の「足が地に行かない」がよく対応している。「大喜びすること」をどちらも「足が空中に浮いていること」が分かる表現を使っている点が一致している。
　英語の「be all smiles」、「be in heaven」、「beside oneself (with something)」、「fall into [go into/be in] raptures (over [at/about] something [someone])」、「in rapture [raptures]」、「in (the) seventh heaven//(be~)」、「on cloud nine [seven]//be~」、「on top of the world」、「over the moon (about something)//be~」、「over the rainbow about (something)//be~」《英》、「up in the air③」などや、日本語の「有頂天になる」、「喜色満面」、「天にも昇る心地」、「舞い上がる」なども近い意を持つ。
