「太りすぎて作業着が着られなくなった」--米会社員のズル休みが増加
いまや、社員が欠勤する際に会社に入れる連絡も、「飼い犬に宿題を食べられた」という学生の言い訳も、レベルはたいして変わらないようだ。
米国では、会社員のズル休みがこれまでになく増えているようだ。求人情報サイトのCareerBuilder.comが行った調査では、米国の会社員の43％が、ここ1年の間に少なくとも1回は仮病を使って仕事を休んだ経験があると回答している。CareerBuilder.comは米国時間4日に調査結果を発表し、この数値が、35％という2004年の調査結果を上回ることを明らかにした。
調査結果からは、多くの会社員が休暇をとる理由（体調が悪いのか、それともレジャーに出かけるのか、など）をさほど意識しなくなっていることが読み取れる。調査では、全回答者の3分の1以上が、どちらも同じ休暇であると認識していることが判明した。なお、調査は8月に2450人を対象として実施された。
仮病を使って会社を休んだ理由として多かったのは、気分転換をしたかったから、あるいは、睡眠不足を解消したかったからというものだった。ほかにも、回答者からは、出社する気分ではなかったから、家事を片付けたかったから、私用があったからという理由が挙げられた。
こうした休み方をする人が最も多いのは水曜日だった。調査では、回答者の27％が、病休を使って週の中休みをとったと回答した。CareerBuilder.comによると、月曜日や金曜日に休んで週末を延長する人も多いが、こうした休み方をすると、上司に仮病と疑われやすいという。
会社員たちは休暇を取得する際に、仮病以外にも、さまざまな理由を使うようだ。調査に参加したマネージャ層からは、思わず吹き出してしまうような面白い話が数多く紹介された。なかには、社員から「トイレにカギを流してしまった」「今日が自分の結婚式だったことを思い出した」「太りすぎて作業着が着られなくなった」と報告されたマネージャがいた。
しかし、こうしたジョークがいつまでも上司に通用すると考えるのは間違っている。マネージャ層の23％が、正当な理由なく欠勤した社員を解雇したと回答している。

More U.S. workers playing hooky

Calling in sick--it's the corporate equivalent of "the dog ate my homework."
And apparently it's more rampant than ever. Forty-three percent of U.S. workers said they've faked illness in order to dodge a day of work at least once in the past year, according to a survey by online job board CareerBuilder.com. That's up from 35 percent in last year's survey, the company said Tuesday.
It may be because the line between sick days and vacation days is blurring in many workers' minds, the August survey indicated. More than a third of the poll's 2,450 respondents view them as equivalent.
A chance to relax and catch up on sleep was the most popular reason respondents gave for playing hooky. Others said they just didn't feel like going to the office or wanted to catch up on housework and errands.
Wednesday was the most frequent day for shirking work, with 27 percent breaking up the week with a sick day. Stretching out the weekend by skipping a Monday or Friday, also common, is likely to raise bosses' suspicions, the report said.
So are elaborate excuses for missing work. Hiring managers that participated in the survey reported a number of laughable stories that could only be inspired by a certain Shel Silverstein poem. Among them, "I accidentally flushed my keys down the toilet," "I forgot I was getting married today," and "I'm too fat to get into my work pants."
But many bosses are not amused. Twenty-three percent reported firing an employee for missing work without a legitimate reason.

Forty-Three Percent of Workers Called in Sick With Fake Excuses in the Last 12 Months, CareerBuilder.com's Survey Finds
Hiring Managers Reveal This Year's Most Bizarre Reasons Employees Gave For Missing Work
CHICAGO, October 4, 2005 - CareerBuilder.com’s annual survey of absenteeism at the office revealed an increase in the number of workers who have called in sick with bogus excuses. Forty-three percent of workers said they called in sick when they felt well at least once during the last year, up from 35 percent in the 2004 survey. The survey also revealed that some hiring managers were less tolerant of workers playing hooky with 23 percent stating they had fired an employee for missing work without a legitimate reason. The CareerBuilder.com survey, "Out of the Office 2005," was conducted from August 10 to August 22, 2005 of more than 2,450 workers, including 875 hiring managers.
The most popular day for calling in sick when feeling well was Wednesday with 27 percent of workers getting over the mid-week hump by fabricating an excuse. While extended weekend absences were also popular with 26 percent of workers calling in sick on Monday and 14 percent on Friday, those partaking may have put themselves at more risk of scrutiny. Sixty-three percent of hiring managers said they are more suspicious of employees calling in sick on a Monday or Friday.
"Thirty-eight percent of workers said they feel sick days are equivalent to vacation days," said Rosemary Haefner, Vice President of Human Resources at CareerBuilder.com. "While the definition of a sick day has evolved with more employers including mental health and special circumstances in the description, workers need to be respectful of company policies and their responsibilities as an employee."
The most popular motivator for missing work was the desire to relax and catch up on sleep as cited by 23 percent of workers. Seventeen percent said they just didn’t feel like going in, 16 percent attributed it to a doctor’s appointment and 9 percent said they had to catch up on housework and run personal errands.
When asked to share the most unusual excuses workers gave for missing work, hiring managers quoted the following examples:
・"I’m too drunk to drive to work."
・"I accidentally flushed my keys down the toilet."
・"I had to help deliver a baby on my way to work." (employee was not in the medical profession)
・"I accidentally drove through the automatic garage door before it opened."
・"My boyfriend’s snake got loose and I’m afraid to leave the bedroom until he gets home."
・"I’m too fat to get into my work pants."
・"God didn’t wake me." (employee didn’t believe in alarm clocks and thought a higher power would wake her when she was ready)
・"I cut my fingernails too short, they’re bleeding and I have to go to the doctor."
・"The ghosts in my house kept me up all night."
・"I forgot I was getting married today."
・"My cow bit me."
・"My son accidentally fell asleep next to wet cement in our backyard. His foot fell in and we can’t get it out."
・"I was watching a guy fixing a septic pump, fell in the hole and hurt myself."
・"I was walking my dog and slipped on a toad in my driveway and hurt my back."
・"My house lock jammed and I’m locked in."
