■The Nation's Favourite Poems (1996, BBC Worldwide Limited)
BBCがかつて放送していたテレビ番組に「The Bookworm」というのがあったらしい。そしてその番組で自分の好きな詩について人気投票を行い、その結果をまとめたアンソロジーがこの一冊。かつて向こうに住んでいたときに、「どういう詩に人気があるのだろう」という興味で購入したもの。前書きに「the nation's preferred one hundred poems seem a reasonably balanced and representative selection of the best English verse」と書いてあるとおり、イギリスの詩の有名どころが一挙集結という感じの本。ペイパーバックで気軽に楽しめるのがいい。値段も5ポンド99ペンスと、この手の本にしてはまあまあこなれた値段。
人気順位の高かった100の詩のうち、そのほとんどがもう亡くなっている詩人の作品。ちなみに一位はラドヤード・キプリングの「If-」だった。そしてもちろん、テニスンやワーズワース、キーツ、イェイツなど大御所たちはちゃんと入っている。僕がたまたま好きなアンドルー・マーヴェルの有名な詩「To His Coy Mistress」は16位だった。
とても興味深いのは現代の詩人たちの人気について。現在でも存命の詩人の作品で一番人気があったのは、ジェニー・ジョセフの有名な詩。テッド・ヒューズ（71位）やシェイマス・ヒーニー（98位）といった大御所を押しのけて、彼女の「Warning」は堂々の22位。実際、この詩は読んでみるととてもおもいしろい。人気の高いのがよくわかる。

And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandles, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired

And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit.
You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.
But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street

紫色とかのけばけばしい服を着て、試食しまくり、他人の庭の花を摘み取るような、そんな老後に備えて、僕も今から少しずつそういう練習をしておいたほうがいいかもしれない。詩にあるとおり、突然そういうことをしだすと周囲の人が驚いてしまうから。
この日記が長くなってしまうからこのくらいで・・・とは思うのだが、どうしても詩をもうひとつ紹介したいという誘惑に勝てない。20世紀の詩の中で、二番目に人気があったのは（子供向けは除く）、ウェンディー・コープの「Bloody Men」だった（50位）。やっぱり読んでみるととてもおもしろい。

Bloody men are like bloody buses-
You wait for about a year
And as soon as one approaches your stop
Two or three others appear.
You look at them flashing their indicators,
Offering you a ride
You're trying to read the destinations,
You haven't much time to decide.
If you make a mistake, there is no turning back.
Jump off, and you'll stand there and gaze
While the cars and the taxis and lorries go by
And the minutes, the hours, the days.
これは短いから訳せそうだ。でも僕では詩的には翻訳できないので、あしからず。

男とはひどいものだ。バスみたいに。
一年間も待ってなくてはならないから。
そしてやっと一台が停留所に近づいてくると、
二台目、三台目が続けて現れる。
バスはウィンカーを点滅させながら、
あなたを乗せようと近づいてくる。
行き先の表示を見ようと、目をこらしてみるが、
どうするか、もう決めかねている時間はない。
もし間違って乗ってしまったら、引き返せなくなる。
さあ始めよう。あなたはそこに立ち、
車やタクシーやトラックが通り過ぎるのをじっと見つめることになる、
何分も、何時間も、何日も。
経歴を見たところ、二人ともオクスフォードのセント・ヒルダ・カレッジ（St Hilda's College・・・数少ない女性のカレッジのひとつ）出身の才媛だった。それにしても現代の人気詩人が二人とも女性であるのは興味深い点。イギリス文学史を勉強した人なら思い返してみるとわかるが、19世紀以前で女性の詩人というのはとても少ない。逆に20世紀以降、とくに戦後、女性詩人の存在感はぐっと増してくる。この傾向は現代のイギリス小説作家に女性が多いのと関係しているのかもしれない。
