蛇腹って？

I noticed that my daughter had recently been using the new term "Jabara."

I was curious, so I asked her what the meaning of it.  

She said, "Masa君 likes Jabara so much!  He made a Jabara for me!  Look!"   Then she showed me a papercraft shaped just like "accordion bellows."  

"So this is a Jabara?" I asked her.   

She said, "Yes! This is a Jabara of trains!"  

Oh! Trains - Now it was all clear.  "Jabara（蛇腹）," she was talking about was an accordion connector placed between train cars.  

I’d heard that my daughter’s friend, Masa君 loved trains so much, but a three-year-old boy who enthused over such a peculiar object or part of trains sounded a little strange but wondrous to me.

小さな子供は日々新しい言葉を何処からともなく仕入れてきますよね。時々突拍子もない言葉も。

上の娘が近頃「蛇腹」という聴き慣れないwordを使っているのに気が付きました。何のこと？と聞くと幼稚園の友達の男の子が大好きだと言います。そして「工作」の時間でその子が娘のために作ってくれたという「蛇腹」を見せてくれました。それは厚紙でできたアコーディオンのような箱状の物体でした。

「電車の蛇腹だよ！コレ！」

という娘の言葉で理解できました。電車の連結部分のフニャフニャしたアレのことだ😂❗️蛇腹って言うんだ、あれ。

その子が大の鉄道好きだったのは知ってましたが、随分と変な物に興味を持つものだと感心してしまいました。

うちの息子も電車好き。先日東京駅にJR東日本の新幹線を見に行ってきました。2歳の息子は「れんけつ（連結）」という言葉が大好きです。

東京駅２０番線、２１番線ホーム（だったかな？）にある待合室がガラガラだったのでお昼のオニギリを食べながら（私はビールを一杯）JR東海の東海道新幹線にはない色とりどりの新幹線を見てきました。

愛宕山

Atagoyama is the highest “mountain” within 23 wards of Tokyo Metropolis, though its elevation is only 26 meters above the ground.   There are two famous attractions on the top of the hill, Atago Shrine and NHK Museum of Broadcasting.  

Atagoyama is also famous for its tunnel, called Atago Zuido, the first and only tunnel in central Tokyo which was made by penetrating through a natural “mountain.”

I was so aghast when I saw such a desolate sight of the inside Tokyo Tower.  All the small shops that used to sell cheap souvenirs to foreign tourists on the floor are all gone. 

I often exchanged conversations with people who worked at those shops when I smoked at the outside smoking area.  I wonder how they're doing and where they're are now. 

My daughter has just turned five years old a few days ago.  She's got two presents from us and her aunt, a beautiful Cinderella’s dress and “Nichirin Sward” of The Damon Slayer. 

23区で一番標高が高い（自然の）山は愛宕神社がある愛宕山だそうです。愛宕山にはNHK放送博物館があります。通訳ガイドを始めた頃、先輩ガイドのガイディングを勉強するため東京タワーまでついて行った後、暇つぶしに良く寄りました。何度来たか分からない程で館内は知り尽くしています😝。無料でここまで楽しめる博物館はなかなかありません。

愛宕山を貫く、こちらも23区内唯一の自然の山に作られたトンネルが愛宕隧道です。昭和５年に完成した歴史あるトンネルでもあります。雰囲気が好きでトンネル内の歩道もよく歩きました。

東京タワーの中に一年以上振りに入ってみました。話には聞いていましたがずっと昔からあった小さなお土産屋さんは全て無くなっていました。いつも外国人旅行者で活気があった２階のあまりの寂れ具合にビックリ。屋外では台湾関連のイベントが開催されていました。こちらも平日のためか未だ緊急事態宣言下のためか閑散としていました。

今日の都内は荒れてますね。足元にお気をつけて❗️

オークラ別館が！

This pedestrian bridge over railroad tracks is me and my son’s favorite and secret spot where various trains can be seen.  If you’re a train lover, you cannot miss this spot.

I sit down on the stairs and spend about half an hour with my son once in a while.  Trains such as Tokaido Shinkansen, Yokosuka Line, Shonan-Shinjuku Line, Narita Express, and other trains pass every two or three minutes from both directions.  Some drivers honk horns when they see us.  My little one gets so excited when it happens.  

It is another enjoyable activity that I discovered during the pandemic; a precious moment spending with my son.

鉄道好きの間でちょっと知られている、近所の歩道橋。東海道新幹線と横須賀線の上下、計４本の線路を跨ぐ橋です。人通りがほとんどなく、電車好きな２才の息子と二人で階段に腰掛けて小一時間ほど通過する電車を眺めています。

コロナ禍で見つけた、たわいもないけれども、嫌なことや不安を忘れてボケーっとできる、（その上）子供達と過ごせる貴重な時間。

先週、溜池山王の旧全日空ホテル脇から桜坂を上がって、久々にオークラ別館に行こうとしたら、別館の周りが白いフェンスで囲まれているのが目に入ってきました。恐れていたことがとうとう現実になってしまったようです。

それはオークラ別館がなくなる日。。。

直ぐにオークラ（現在の正式名称はThe Okura Tokyo。電話かけると「ありがとうございます！"ジ" オークラ東京でございます」と言われる。南館以上に歴史に残りそうな価値ある旧本館をぶっ潰し、外資系高級ホテルを真似て料金も２倍以上の強気設定にした挙句“ジ”だってさ🤣）の公式ページを見てみると、別館は昨年、すでに閉鎖されていたらしい🙀。私の中でオークラ別館は大好きなホテルだったので残念すぎました😢。
