先日、Eテレの「スーパープレゼンテーション」をたまたま(初めて!)見ました。
イギリス人のGavin Pretor-Pinneyさんのプレゼンテーションでした。タイトルが素敵

・・・の部分、何だと思いますか？
'cloudy with a chance of rain' なら、天気予報でよく耳にするフレーズ。「曇り、時々雨」。 chanceには「可能性」の意味がありますね。

Gavinさんは、Cloud Appreciation Societyを設立した方。雲を愛でるんですね。
英語では「雲」というと、ネガティブなイメージがあります(nagative associations towards the clouds)。
Someone who's down or depressed, they're under a cloud. When there's bad news in store, there's a cloud on the horizon.
But they're beautiful. Their beauty is missed. People don't notice the beauty.
They don't even notice the clouds unless they get in the way of the sun. So people think of clouds as things that get in the way. They think of them as the annoying, frustrating obstructions, and then they rush off and do some blue-sky thinking.
「雲の下に入っている」とか「水平線上の雲」みたいな良くない状況を表す表現に使われるんですね。でも、本来雲はとても美しいものなんです。それに気付いていないだけで。雲が太陽の邪魔をしている時しか、雲を意識しないからでしょうか。雲をイライラの原因と考えてしまうんです。そういうのをGavinさんは'blue-sky thinking'と、同じく「空」つながりの表現をしています。「非現実的な考え」という意味です。
Who can't remember looking at finding shapes in the clouds when they were kids? When you were masters of daydreaming?
確かに、子供の頃はよく空を眺めて、「あの雲、～に見えない？」とか空想したものです。その頃は空想の天才でしたから。でも、大人になると、しなくなります。大人ももっと空想にふけるべきだとGavinさんは言います。
Clouds are the most egalitarian（平等主義の） of nature's displays, because we all have a good, funtastic view of the sky. You don't need to rush off away from the familiar, across the world, to be surprised. You just need to step outside, pay attention to what's so commonplace, so everyday, so mundane(日常の、ありふれた) that everybody else misses it.
曇って、誰でも空を見上げれば見ることのできるもの。平等に与えられたものです。遠くに行く必要はなく、ただ外に出て見上げるだけでいい。忘れていた日常の中にあるものなんですね。
Cloudspotting is pointless. It's a pointless activity, which is precisely why it's so important. The digital world conspires(陰謀をたくらむ) to make us feel eternally busy. You have to now contend with answering a mountain of unanswered e-mails, updating a Facebook page, feeding Twitter feed.
雲を観るのは意味のないことです。しかし、その意味のないことが大切なことなんです。私たちは今デジタル社会で、大量のメールの返信や、SNSのアップデートなどに忙しく追われています。
And cloudspotting legitimazes(= legitimates 正当化する) doing nothing. Sometimes we need excuses to do nothing. It's good for your ideas, your creativity, and for your soul.
時には何もしないことへの言い訳が必要ですね。なるほど。空を見上げて空想にふける余裕が、良い考え、創造を生む気がしますね。

最近、秋晴れのお天気が続いて、本当に空がきれいで、私もよく空を見上げます。すがすがしい気分になれますね。夕焼けもとっても綺麗です。
Gavinさんのお国、イギリスは、本当にcloudyな日が多いのですが、空を見上げれば楽しみが増えて、憂鬱にならずに済みそうです。
