埃のたまった書棚。すっかりリ忘れ去られた、数々の本。ふと、それらを整理し始める。すると、一冊の本が眼に留まる。池内 紀著『ドイツ 町から町へ』（中公新書）。８年前に刊行されたものだ。<o:p></o:p>

頁をめくって、「ブレーメン」の項には、こんなことが記されている。<o:p></o:p>

「市庁舎、裁判所、公会堂、商館、教会……。どの建物も、おそろしく重厚にできていて、幾世紀にもわたる富の蓄積を感じさせる。足元の石畳もまた黒ずんで重々しい。まわりから威圧され、気がめいってくるほどだ。<o:p></o:p>

そんな市中にあって、ベトヒャー通りは息抜きの空間である。たくさんの小店が入っており、そぞろ歩くのにいい。ルードビッヒ・ロゼリーウスというコーヒー商人が二十世紀のはじめに運動して、いまのような通りにした。彼もまた勤勉と重厚一点ばりの町の雰囲気が息苦しくてならなかったのではあるまいか。<o:p></o:p>

ここはのらくら者の通りであって、一日ぶらぶらしていてもいい。「怠け者の泉」などもある。「ロビンソン・クルーソーの家」もある。でたらめではない。デフォーの小説を読むとわかるが、ロビンソン・クルーソーの父親はブレーメンの生まれだ。のちにイギリスにわたり、その息子が広い世界へ船出する。当時、人々はそんなふうに思っていたのだろう。ブレーメンは絶海の孤島へものびていくネットワークの始まりの一点だった。」<o:p></o:p>
