ダイヤ鉱脈

There was a farmer in Africa who was happy and content. He was happy because he was content. He was content because he was happy. One day a wise man came to him and told him about the glory of diamonds and the power that goes along with them. The wise man said, "If you had a diamond the size of your thumb, you could have your own city. If you had a diamond the size of your fist, you could probably own your own country." And then he went away. That night the farmer couldn't sleep. He was unhappy and he was discontent. He was unhappy because he was discontent and discontent because he was unhappy. The next morning he made arrangements to sell off his farm, took care of his family and went in search of diamonds. He looked all over Africa and couldn't find any. He looked all through Europe and couldn't find any. When he got to Spain, he was emotionally, physically and financially broke. He got so disheartened that he threw himself into the Barcelona River and committed suicide. Back home, the person who had bought his farm was watering the camels at a stream that ran through the farm. Across the stream, the rays of the morning sun hit a stone and made it sparkle like a rainbow. He thought it would look good on the mantle piece. He picked up the stone and put it in the living room. That afternoon the wise man came and saw the stone sparkling. He asked, "Is Hafiz back?" The new owner said, "No, why do you ask?" The wise man said, "Because that is a diamond. I recognize one when I see one." The man said, no, that's just a stone I picked up from the stream. Come, I'll show you. There are many more." They went and picked some samples and sent them for analysis. Sure enough, the stones were diamonds. They found that the farm was indeed covered with acres and acres of diamonds.	アフリカに幸せで満足している農夫がいました。満足しているから幸せでした。幸せだから満足していました。あるとき賢者がやってきて、ダイヤモンドの輝かしさとそれに付随する力について話をしました。「親指ほどのダイヤがあれば、町を買える。こぶし大のダイヤがあれば、国が買える」、賢者は言いました。そう言うと賢者は去って行きました。その夜農夫は眠れませんでした。彼は不幸せで満足していませんでした。満足できないので不幸せで、不幸せだから満足できませんでした。次の朝、彼は農場を売り払う手配をし、家族の世話を取り計らい、ダイヤ探しに出かけました。アフリカ中を探しましたが、全く見つかりません。ヨーロッパ中を探しましたが、全く見つかりません。スペインに着いたとき、彼は精神的にも、肉体的にも、経済的にも、ボロボロでした。心が折れて、彼はバルセロナ河に身を投げ自殺しました。話を家に戻すと、農夫の農場を買った男が、農場の中を流れる水路からラクダに水をやっていました。水路の向こう岸で朝日が石に当たり、虹のように輝いていました。男は暖炉に置いたら綺麗だろうなぁと思いました。石を拾いあげ、居間に置きました。その午後、賢者がやってきて、石が輝いているのを見ました。賢者は尋ねました、「ハフィツは戻ったか？」新しい家主は答えました、「いえ、どうしてきくのですか？」賢者は言いました、「それがダイヤだからだ。見ればわかる」。男は、いいえ、水路で拾ったただの石ですと言いました。おいでなさい、ご覧にいれましょう。もっとたくさんありますから。」二人は行って、サンプルを拾って分析に送りました。案の定、その石はダイヤでした。農場は何エイカーものダイヤの鉱脈だったのです。
What is the moral of this story? There are five morals:	この話の教訓は何でしょう。５つあります。
1. When our attitude is right, we realize that we are all walking on acres and acres of diamonds. Opportunity is always under our feet. We don't have to go anywhere. All we need to do is recognize it.	1.私たちの姿勢が正しければ、自分がダイヤモンドの鉱脈の中を歩いていることに気づきます。チャンスは常に私たちの足元にあります。どこにも行く必要はありません。それに気づきさえすればいいのです。
2. The grass on the other side always looks greener.	2.隣の芝生はいつも青く見えます。
3. While we are dyeing the grass on the other side, there are others who are dyeing the grass on our side. They would be happy to trade places with us.	3.向こうの芝生を染めているあいだに、私たちの芝生を染めてくれる人がいます。場所が交換できるといいですね。
4. When people don't know how to recognize opportunity, they complain of noise when it knocks.	4.チャンスに気づく方法がわからないと、チャンスがノックしてくれる音にも文句を言います。
5. The same opportunity never knocks twice. The next one may be better or worse, but it is never the same one.	5.同じチャンスが二度ノックしてくることはありません。次に来るチャンスは前のよりも良いこともあれば良くないこともありますが、決して同じではありません。
