決定

A human being is not one thing among others; things determine each other, but man is ultimately self-determining. What he becomes - within the limits of endowment and environment- he has made out of himself. In the concentration camps, for example, in this living laboratory and on this testing ground, we watched and witnessed some of our comrades behave like swine while others behaved like saints. Man has both potentialities within himself; which one is actualized depends on decisions but not on conditions.

人間はたくさんあるものの中の一つのモノではありません。モノは互いを決定しますが、人間は究極的に自己決定的です。人間がなるもの、与えられたものと環境の制限の中で、人間は自分自身を作り出します。例えば、強制収容所では、この人体実験室でありこの試験場では、私たちは仲間が豚のようにふるまうのを観察し目撃すると同時に聖人のようにふるまうものもいました。人間は自分の内に両方の可能性を秘めています。どちらの可能性が実現するかは状況にではなく決定によるのです。
