Winter is to get a farewell fanfare this Sunday (Feb. 26) when a number of torchlit processions are held throughout the country.
The traditional Buergbrennen event is based on an ancient pagan tradition, marking the end of Winter and the start of Spring. Taking place on the first Sunday in Lent in Luxembourg, the occasion is marked by a torchlit parade through the streets, which culminates in a giant bonfire in which old Christmas trees are burned among other things.
Residents can choose from a number of Buergbrennen events taking place around the capital this year with the main gathering being held in the Pétrusse Valley.
The event is organised by the Ville de Luxembourg with the Lëtzebuerger Guiden a Scouten and Frënn vun der Péitruss vzw. Festivities kick off at around noon when drink and food stands open in the valley.
The procession began at 7pm when a cross was lit in the valley.
Similar Buergbrennen events was held in Beggen, in Bonnevoie, in Cents and Cessange.
