「Good!]

Day 10 – Living Contentment

“I think we should be working for contentment . . . an inner sense of fulfillment
that’s relatively independent of external circumstances.”
― Andrew Weil

“When we speak of spiritual contentment, we mean more than just feeling satisfied with the circumstances of life. Too often that kind of contentment includes a tinge of resignation as well. Real contentment is the happiness that at your core, all is well in your world. In this state, you are aware that you have everything you need right now to feel good about yourself, others, and life. Even with outer conflicts and uncertainties, your core existence is settled, self-contained, and you know you possess whatever is needed to meet any situation. Living true contentment is more than confidence, it is the feeling of inner fulfillment.

In our meditation today we will activate this sense of fulfillment to bring spiritual contentment into our hearts, and our heads.”

Today’s Centering Thought

“I am content, just as I am.”

Sanskrit Mantra

“Sampriya Hum – I am complete contentment” (Deepak’s pronunciation sounds like Sahmpreeya Hum)

Oprah

“Welcome.  It is day 10 already, Living Contentment.  This, My Friends, is a big day.  It is the foundation for so much more!  We all know others who pursue peak moments of ultimate happiness in life and we think about the happiest moments in our own lives; we often think of those kinds of peak moments – births, weddings, grand travels, awards, promotions, but what we’re exploring today is not the pursuit of happiness, it is the creation of happiness.  Big difference.  That begins with a foundation of being content inside yourself.  What is the secret to beginning from a starting point of happiness every day?  It is this…allowing your life to unfold with this confidence – knowing that all is well and all will be well, no matter what.  Many great spiritual leaders from Socrates to the Dalai Lama to even Gandhi have each taught us that it is what we think and feel about our circumstances that actually most influences our happiness.  The Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu said it so well, “rejoice in the way things are”.  When you realize there is nothing lacking, the world belongs to you.  That is contentment and it is the essential basis of true happiness.  As Deepak leads us to meditate today, let’s focus on getting past the noise of those peaks and valleys that happen in all of our lives.  Let’s breathe into this very moment with a sense of acceptance and ease and find a level of being content.  What I know for sure is the universe will meet you exactly where you are.  So let’s take a deep breath, listen and let go to a space of contentment.”

Deepak

“Being happy doesn’t mean that everything looks perfect and ideal every minute of the day.  It means that life is unfolding without struggle, that anxiety and insecurity aren’t our companions and that the best time of our lives is now.  You have been taking major steps to establish this state which registers at the feeling level as contentment.  Psychological research has shown that each person has a baseline of happiness.  It’s like your body’s basal metabolism which determine your body’s level of physical energy.   When you exercise or perform hard physical work, your metabolism rises to give your muscles needed extra energy but once you are at rest again, your body returns to its metabolic set point.  Likewise you can experience peaks of joy and enthusiasm but the rest of the time you remain at your emotional set point.  Studies have shown that when people experience loss or trauma such as life threatening illness, losing their job or having a close family member die, they feel unhappy and disturbed yet, in time, they return to their emotional set point, usually within six months.  Nature always moves to restore inner balance.  There is not enough research on how to change a person’s emotional set point but a healthy norm would be to live in contentment.  Contentment is a baseline state where you rest in your own being.  Anger and anxiety are not bubbling just below the surface.  You are open to new possibilities and greet them optimistically.

The world wisdom traditions hold out a much higher and more exalted level of bliss.   Our meditation opens the path to this higher level of contentment however, contentment can be a living reality today, making the connection to your true self allows the imperfections, challenges and uncertainties in life to be transcend.

Transcendence isn’t mystical.  It means going beyond the surface activity of the mind which is restless and conflicted to find the level of being that is content.  At this level, you are happy to be here.  Existence is enough.  The quiet joy of contentment can then be brought into everyday life by embracing all the adversities and uncertainties of life from the vantage point of pure awareness.  The process of infusing your life with pure awareness takes time but experiencing inner contentment happens now, every time you transcend in meditation.

As we prepare to meditate together, let’s take a moment to consider our centering thought, I am content just as I am.  I am content just as I am.

Let’s prepare for our meditation.  Make yourself comfortable and close your eyes.  Become aware of your breath and just breathe, slowly and deeply.  With each breath, allow yourself to become more deeply relaxed.  Now gently introduce the mantra, Sampriya Hum.  This mantra connects our physical localized self with our perfect nonlocal immortal self.  Repeat it silently to yourself.  Sampriya Hum.  Sampriya Hum.  Sampriya Hum.  With each repetition, feel your body, mind and spirit open and receive just a little more.  Whenever you find yourself distracted by thoughts, noises or physical sensations, simply return your attention to silently repeating the mantra.  Sampriya Hum.  Sampriya Hum.  Sampriya Hum.  Continue with your meditation for about 10 minutes.  Sampriya Hum.  Sampriya Hum.  Sampriya Hum.  Just mentally.  Sampriya Hum.  Sampriya Hum.  Sampriya Hum.

Release the mantra.  Continue to sit restfully, inhaling and exhaling slowly.  When you feel ready, open your eyes.

As you continue with your day, contemplate the centering thought, I am content just as I am.  I am content just as I am. I am content just as I am.

Namaste

Journal Questions:

1.  “Contentment from a spiritual perspective is the deep experience in consciousness that all is well, regardless of what it looks like on the surface. Write down an experience you have had like this, or similar to this.”

2.  “Think back to that experience, take time to recall how that contentment felt. Don’t consider your thoughts or analyze the experience, just describe the emotional state you were in. Was it pleasant, calming, soothing, loving, and or comforting? Write a short list of these feelings.”

3.  “Your list of feelings is an indicator that your contentment was coming from your core self of happiness. Know that this contentment is always there and available within you. Write today’s centering thought two times: “I am content, just as I am.” As you write it the first time, think of that situation where you felt contentment. When you write it the second time, feel and describe in detail that contentment in the present moment.”

4.  “Reflect further on today’s experience”
