和製英語 センスが良い

2019-07-17 | Diary of a saucy kid
As you know, when Japanese people describe about people like fashion models, we express "スマート(smart)" in English-like Japanese, which means thin and nice figure, and is not related to their intelligence.

As well as this, when we also describe about people dressed well, we express "センスが良い (good sense)" in English-like Japanese. However "good sense" means down-on-earth, or sensible, which is about common sense, but not related to their good or bad tastes. So if you want to express what kind of sense, you have to add it. For instance "sense of humor", "sense of fashion", "sense of smell", and so on. Not all the people who are mature and have good sense, have a good sense of fashion.

By the way, it's very interesting to note that there is exactly the same meaning word in Japanese as "down-on-earth" of adjective. Maybe 地に足がついた came from English originally. Our ancestors have copied well in this case.
