Enemy submarines entered Panama Sea Frontier in June,1942, a very favorable moment for attack. Reinforcements for the Pacific Fleet were constantly passing through the Canal. Rear Admiral Clifford E.Van Hook had at his disposal only four old destroyers, Barie, Barry, Tatnall, and Gaff; gunboat Erie, two PCs, two small converted motor yachts, and 24 Catalinas. In view of the Japanese attacks on the Aleutians and Midway during the first week of June, the Frontier had to prepare for a possible carrier or submarine raid on the Pacific side, and its most watchful care was extended in that direction.
It was a rude shock when U-159 sank eight ships in four days, two of them right off the Canal entrance. On 17 June, a British tanker bringing diesel oil to Cristobal was shelled by two U-boats and sunk within 75 miles of her destination. Shortly after, two ships were sunk off Santa Marta, and on 2 July the redoubtable “Ajax” Achilles in U-161 put into Puerto Limon, Costa Rica, and torpedoed a steamer loading at a dock. That concluded this blitz on the Panama Canal approaches. No more than five submarines had disposed of an average of a ship a day for two weeks, and retired without damage—without even being attacked, except from the air.

1942年6月、日本の連合艦隊は、総力をあげてミッドウエー作戦を敢行した。そして、ハワイのパールハーバー西北西1,800Km、ミッドウエー島付近で日米の空母機動部隊が激突した。アメリカ側は空母1隻を失っただけなのに対し、日本側は4隻の主力空母とその優秀な航空戦力を失い、敗退、以後守勢にたたされることになった。
