[5] There is(are)~の出題例
先に登場した以下の文はある主体がどんな位置関係にあるかを表現したものです。
The man is (sitting) on the bench.
その男性はベンチにいる(座っている)
The store is (located) by the river.
その店は川のそばにある(位置している)
一方、Thereを使うと、「ほらそこ」といった意味となり、その具体的な位置関係はon the bench とかby the riverなどのように後ろで説明されます。
つまり「ほら男性が一人いるよ、ペンチに(座っているよ」とか、「ほら店が一軒あるよ、川のそばに」といったイメージです。この場合、「ほら」と強調するからbe動詞が主語の前に置かれます。
There is a man (sitting) on the bench.
その男性はベンチにいる(座っている)
There is a store (located) by the river.
その店は川のそばにある(位置している)

地下室に通じるドアが３つある
(10) There is a gate in the fence.

オートバイレースが行なわれている
(12) There is smoke in the air.
空中に煙がたなびいている
ここでも方位語が活躍しますが、本当にむずかしいのは日本語と英語の発想がこちなることから、(11)の例では「行なわれている」とか、(12)の例では「たなびいている」といった意味となることです。
