Cosi fan tutte

Will Sigiswald Kuijken and Marleen Thiers - the leading forces behind the Baroque Orchestra "LA PETITE BANDE" - make another pilgrimage in this second Corona-spring, together with their compagnon Jean-Marie?
Yes, they will !
Hereunder, they explain their plans in their own words :
From 1st till 25th of May 2021, we will be on the road ! Because of the crisis- measures, we will stay in our own country (as we did in 2020) and make beautiful day trips.
This year, 2021, we dedicate our journey more than ever to our orchestra "La Petite Bande", which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2022. The friendly and deeply appreciated support that we hope to receive again from our fans for this "pilgrimage" next May, will be entirely used for the celebration of this joyful anniversary.
Due to the Corona-situation, it is very difficult on this day to determine and set all the programs, but...
"Where there is a will, there is a way"... and so we believe that LPB will be able to prepare and perform everything meaningfully and festively in the jubilee year 2022 !
"Musica medicina dolorum" will be our motto for the year 2022.
The most challenging project in the context of LPB's 50th anniversary is
Mozart's opera "Così fan tutte".
Così fan tutte (or "That's the way all women do", created in 1790) is the last of the three operas Mozart wrote on a text by the master librettist Lorenzo da Ponte (the other two were Le Nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni) - the piece is a brilliant, shrewd and penetrating reflection of the mores in the upper circles of Mozart's time, without however making a clear moralistic "judgement": The lively and often far-fetched amorous intrigues and events are brilliantly and humorously portrayed, and Mozart's music is at every moment the perfect accomplice and stimulator... (In the 19th century, the piece was condemned by many as immoral, and there were even adaptations that provided the genial music with a completely different text...) - LPB's performance, where Marie Kuijken, our second daughter, will be the stage director, will be entirely in line with the late 18th-century theatrical conventions - and thus promises to be truly a lively and funny Mozartian feast.
Another part of the celebration will be J.S. Bach, Brandenburg Concertos Nos. 3 to 6 plus the wonderful trio sonata from Das Musikalische Opfer. Performances with this program have already been scheduled in Japan and Switzerland in the autumn of 2022. Concerts in our own country are planned.
Bach's St. Matthew Passion was also to be included in this festive year: in the time before Easter 2022, LPB will give for the third time a concert with the St. Matthew Passion at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam - one of the world's most famous concert halls for over a century... Other performances are being discussed.
As its fourth project in this special year 2022, LPB is planning a highly original Mozart programme, featuring concertos for one, two and three fortepianos (with orchestra) - performed on very fine copies after a splendid original by J.A.Stein (1785), an instrument builder who belonged to Mozart's circle of friends. The soloists will be: Luc Devos, and our daughters Veronica and Marie Kuijken. LPB has worked with these three musicians as soloists on 'Mozart piano' for several years.
So, as I said, in this Corona-year we will again walk in our own country, but this time no longer in the immediate surroundings of Kortrijk. We will choose a starting point within a radius of about 50 km from home, to which we will drive by car, and then we will walk 20 to 30 km (or sometimes more) in that area.
After that, we will return home every time. - Because of his work, our pilgrim- companion Jean-Marie won't be able to join us every day. Nevertheless, his spirit will accompany us constantly - and so he will be with us also this year.
In a broader philosophical sense, we dedicate our journey this year to the healing of our (now painfully) crowned Mother Earth and all her inhabitants.
As always on our pilgrimages, we take no technical gadgets with us, no digital speedometers, no mobile phones or smartphones, no violins or other toys. No... Only our walking sticks and our rucksack with food go with us. The house computer will be also locked up, so that when we come home in the evening and at night, peace and quiet can reign in our hearts.
...like in the quiet garden of our beguinage...
What will La Petite Bande use your donations for?
Of course, for the whole of the 2022 festival programme! And... several ten- thousands of euros will be needed for that. We cannot say exactly for which production your donations will be used, but there is a good chance that it will be mainly for the Mozart opera "Cosi fan tutte", as this will be the most expensive production, even though I (Sigiswald) am adapting the orchestral score for a strongly reduced ensemble (string quintet, 2 horns and harpsichord - such adaptations were also common in Mozart's time). The costumes for the 6 singers must be designed and made, and the costs (travel, lodging, fees) for the many weeks of stage rehearsals and the thorough instrumental preparation will inevitably be considerable. So you understand, a lot is needed!
Donations are free and can be made in the following ways:

(If you make a deposit via this Foundation, please send an E-mail to Herman@lapetitebande.be as well, in order to notify him of your deposit and to provide your postal home address.)
How will La Petite Bande thank all those who have contributed to this new pilgrimage action of 2021 ?
1. We will each of us write down our experiences along the way, and this story will then be sent to each donor by mail (or by post).
2. An exclusive private concert (this time exceptionally in the morning) will be offered to all donors, probably on Wednesday 29 September at 11am in Leuven - the precise information will follow later. The programme includes J.S. Bach concertos for harpsichord(s) and strings (as well as one violin concerto), with soloists Mario Sarrecchia, Bart Naessens and Sara Kuijken. This production has had to be rescheduled 3 times due to Corona... This program will then be recorded on CD for the German company ACCENT.
3. If all goes as planned, this Bach CD will also be your reward for the donations for the pilgrimage 2021: all donors will receive this CD by post in the spring of 2022 (hence the request to include your home address in the payment of your donation).
Below, in the third and last photo, you can see where we, Sigiswald and Marleen, are lucky to live - in the Kortrijk Beguinage, from where we will set off on our pilgrimage each day...
You can see our house (with the pointed roof) on the right behind us!
