RED STAR OVER
    CHINA
BY EDGAR SNOW

This is a record of unique and permanent importance that covers the life of China during the past nine years, up to late August, 1937, and explains clearly the extraordinary events and intrigues that finally resulted in the present united stand of China against Japan.
Edgar Snow, chief correspondent in the Far East for the London Daily Herald, sent the following letter to his publishers, along with the photographs that are reproduced in this volume :

“ Except fo the few pictures taken by the Reds themselves which have never been available for publication, these are the only pictures ever taken of the Chinese Red Army, of life in the Soviet districts, and of Red political and militally leaders. The Kuomintang armies have been fighting with the Communist armies in China ever since 1927. Millions of words have been written about these wars, but no one, Chinese or foreign , has actually entered Red territory, visited Red leaders, investigated Soviet life, and returned to write the story. All other accounts are based upon Kuomintang propaganda or on the secret information from Communist sources which

could not be verified by any objective observer. For nine years there has been a complete news blockade enforced around all Soviet districts in China by the surrounding Government forces. I am the first person to have broken this blockade, entered Red China, and brought out the story for the world. It sounds incredible that such a condition could actually have exisited but such is the case. The reasons are these :
“1.Because Communism is a crime punishable by death in China. No Chinese Red, therefore, has been free to enter and return and write about what he saw. Foreign Communists have been excluded because it would have been a matter of the gravest danger to pass he Kuomingtang  blockade; they would certainly have been killed or deported long before reaching the fort.
“2.Red Areas in China because of the nature of the Chinese revolution have been in the interior, and isolated from the big cities, and they have been encircled by cordons and cordons of Kuomingtang troops. In the 5th Campaign against the Reds in the south over 1,000,000 men made up this encirclement.
“ I am not trying to doramatize myself, you must understand, but merely to state the facts in the case so that the uniqueness of my pictures and also of the book I am going to write will be known to you, in case you do not have much idea of the nature of my material.

Red Star Over China is the book Snow “ was going to write. “ It was completed in August, 1937. Snow is now with the Chinese armies in the field, covering the war that he predicted with such uncanny accuracy.

After you have read this book you will really understand what is happening in China today.

Lin Piao, Graduate of Whampoa Academy and once Ciang Kai-shek's most brilliant young tactician, is at twenty-eight conceded to be the outstanding tactical genius of all military officers in China. He has developed many new and impotant war manoeuvres, and his articles on military tactics have been widely reprinted in Soviet Russia and even in the Kuomingtang armies' own journals. Lin and his army have never suffered a single defeat, but have disarmed literally scores of Kuomingtang regiments in their nine years of fighting with Kuomingtang troops. He is today acting President of the Red Army Academy in Pao-an.
