アーサー王と魔女

Young King Arthur was ambushed and imprisoned by the monarch of a neighboring kingdom. The monarch could have killed him but was moved by Arthur's youth and ideals. So, the monarch offered him his freedom, as long as he could answer a very difficult question. Arthur would have a year to figure out the answer and, if after a year, he still had no answer, he would be put to death.	若いアーサー王は隣国の君主に待ち伏せされ捕えらえました。その君主はアーサーを殺すこともできましたが、アーサーの若さと理想に心を動かされました。そこで、アーサーが超難問に答えることができたら自由にすると言ってくれました。アーサーはその答えを見つけるのに1年の猶予をもらいましたが、1年たっても答えが見つからなければ、殺されてしまいます。
The question?....What do women really want? Such a question would perplex even the most knowledgeable man, and to young Arthur, it seemed an impossible query. But, since it was better than death, he accepted the monarch's proposition to have an answer by year's end.	その問題は何かと言いますと、女性が本当に欲しいものは何か、というものでした。このような問題は最も物知りな者も困らせますので、若いアーサーには、ムリだと思えました。ですが、死ぬよりはましだと思い、1年後に答えるという君主の提案を受け入れました。
He returned to his kingdom and began to poll everyone: the princess, the priests, the wise men and even the court jester. He spoke with everyone, but no one could give him a satisfactory answer. Many people advised him to consult the old witch, for only she would have the answer. But the price would be high; as the witch was famous throughout the kingdom for the exorbitant prices she charged.	アーサーは国に帰ると、いろんな人に尋ねました。王妃に司祭に賢者に道化師にも尋ねました。いろんな人と話をしましたが、満足いく答えを教えてくれる人は誰もいませんでした。多くの人が魔女に相談するように勧めました、というのも魔女だけが答えを知っているからでした。しかしその代償は高くつくのでした、魔女は法外な代償をふっかけるということで国中で有名だったのです。
The last day of the year arrived and Arthur had no choice but to talk to the witch She agreed to answer the question, but he would have to agree to her price first. The old witch wanted to marry Sir Lancelot, the most noble of the Knights of the Round Table and Arthur's closest friend! Young Arthur was horrified. She was hunchbacked and hideous, had only one tooth, smelled like sewage, made obscene noises, etc. He had never encountered such a repugnant creature in all his life.	一年の最後の日になり、アーサーは魔女と話をせざるを得なくなりました。魔女は同意してくれましたが、アーサーは初めに魔女への代償に同意しなければなりませんでした。その年寄りの魔女は円卓の騎士の中で最も気高くアーサーの親友でもあるランスロットとの結婚を望みました。若いアーサーは恐怖に襲われました。魔女はせむしでおぞましく、歯も1本しかなく、下水のような臭いがし、下品な音を出したりしていました。アーサーは人生でこんな不快な生き物に出会ったことはありませんでした。
He refused to force his friend to marry her and endure such a terrible burden; but Lancelot, learning of the proposal, spoke with Arthur. He said nothing was too big of a sacrifice compared to Arthur's life and the preservation of the Round Table.	アーサーはランスロットを彼女と結婚させてこんなひどい重荷に耐えさせることは断りました。しかしランスロットはその提案を知り、アーサーと話をしました。アーサーの命と円卓の維持に比べればどんな犠牲も大したことはないとランスロットは言いました。
Hence, a wedding was proclaimed and the witch answered Arthur's question thus: What a woman really wants, she answered....is to be in charge of her own life! Everyone in the kingdom instantly knew that the witch had uttered a great truth and that Arthur's life would be spared. And so it was, the neighboring monarch granted Arthur his freedom and Lancelot and the witch had a wonderful wedding.	そういうわけで、結婚が宣言され、魔女はアーサーの問題に次のように答えました。女性が本当に欲しいものは、自分の人生は自分で決めたいということだ。魔女の言ったことが偉大な真実であり、アーサーの命も救われるだろうと王国の人はみなすぐに納得しました。そういうことで、隣国の君主はアーサーを自由にしてやり、ランスロットと魔女は盛大な結婚式をあげました。
The honeymoon hour approached and Lancelot, steeling himself for a horrific experience, entered the bedroom. But, what a sight awaited him. The most beautiful woman he had ever seen lay before him on the bed. The astounded Lancelot asked what had happened	蜜月の時間が近づき、ランスロットはぞっとするような体験に堪える心構えをして、寝室に入りました。しかし何という光景が彼を待っていたことでしょう。今まで彼が見た中で一番美しい女性が彼の目の前でベッドに横になっていました。驚いたランスロットは何が起きたのか尋ねました。
The beauty replied that since he had been so kind to her when she appeared as a witch, she would henceforth, be her horrible deformed self only half the time and the beautiful maiden the other half. Which would he prefer? Beautiful during the day...or night?	その美女が答えて言うには、魔女として現れた時にランスロットがとても親切にしてくれたので、魔女は以後一日の半分はおぞましい醜い姿で、残りの半分は美しい乙女になると言うのでした。どちらがお好みですか？昼間美しいのと、夜美しいのと？
Noble Lancelot said that he would allow HER to make the choice herself. Upon hearing this, she announced that she would be beautiful all the time because he had respected her enough to let her be in charge of her own life.	気高いランスロットは言いました、ご自分でお決めなさい。これを聞くとすぐに魔女は言いました、私に敬意を払って自分の人生を自分で決めさせてくれたのですから、ずっと美しいままでいることにしましょう。
