この日には、ウナギを食べることが多くあります。これは江戸時代からの伝統です。これは250年位以前からの習慣です。ウナギは夏の暑さに負けない体力をつける食べ物とされています。ただし、もちろんこの日にウナギを食べない人も沢山います。また、この日以外にウナギを食べる人も沢山います。ウナギは平らに割いて、たれをつけて焼きます。画像は左側が”うな＿どん”。右側が”うな重”です。もっとも一般的な食べ方です。
土用とは四立（立春、立夏、立秋、立冬）の前、約１８日の期間のことです。この期間のうち、 １２日周期で割り当てられている十二支が『丑の日』の日が、 『土用丑の日』なのです。
