浦賀駅の階段を下ると、巨大な建物が海側の道沿いに続いています。

一世紀以上にわたって約1000隻にのぼる艦船をつくり続けてきた浦賀ドックの跡地です。

平成15年（2003）に閉鎖されるまで、30ｍを越す高さのクレーンが空を覆い、日本丸、海王丸をはじめ、青函連絡船・大型タンカー・自動車運搬船・護衛艦などの船がこの浦賀ドックで建造され、街はドックで働く人たちでにぎわいました。

浦賀での造船の歴史は古く、安政元年（1854）現在は暗渠となっている浦賀駅前を流れる「長川」の河口で、中島三郎助らにより日本最初の洋式軍艦である鳳凰丸が建造されました。

太平洋横断直前の咸臨丸も、この河口で修理が行われました。

明治24年（1891）中島三郎助の23回忌にあたり、函館戦争の同志であった荒井郁之助が浦賀に造船所を造ることを提唱しました。

榎本武揚が賛成して地元の有力者に働きかけ、明治30年（1897）浦賀船渠株式会社が創設され、2年後にはドライドックが建造されました。

浦賀船渠株式会社は、浦賀重工業㈱を経て住友重機械工業㈱となり、平成15年（2003）3月に閉鎖されました。

現在、一般の見学はできませんが、「咸臨丸フェスティバル」や「中島三郎助まつり」などの際に、ドライドックを含め一部が公開されます。

昭和18年（1943）に作られ、１基のみ解体されずに残されているクレーン、明治32年（1957）に建造されたドライドックなど（いずれも浦賀生協付近からフランス積みのれんが塀越しに見ることができます）に、当時の面影を偲ぶことができます。

「浦賀造船所」

浦賀湾を囲むこの施設は、住友重機械工場株式会社追浜造船所浦賀工場です。

創業以来、浦賀船渠株式会社、浦賀重工業株式会社、更には現在の社名と変わりましたが、広く「浦賀ドック」の愛称で呼ばれてきました。

この造船所は、明治二十九年、当時農商務大臣であった榎本武揚などの提唱により、陸軍要さい砲兵幹部練習所の敷地及び民有地を取得して設立準備を進め、翌三十年六月二十一日の会社設立登記をもって発足したものです。

資本金は百万円でした。

そのころの日本は、日清戦争などの影響もあって、外国から多くの艦船を買い入れ、世界的な海運国に発展しようとしていました。

一方造船界は、技術面や設備面で大きく立ち遅れていました。その遅れを取り戻すため、外国人技師を雇い入れて国内各地に次々と造船所を造っていきました。

この造船所もそのなかの一つで、ドイツ人技師ボーケルを月給約百五十円で雇いドックを築きました。

明治三十五年十月十五日、フィリピンの沿岸警備用砲艦ロンブロン号（350排水トン）を進水させました。

創業以来手がけてきた船は、いずれも国内の企業から受注した工事用運搬船のたぐいばかりでしたが、十四隻目に初めて外国から受注した本格派の艦船を世に送り出しました。

しかし、造船所の歩んだ道は、決して楽ではなかったようです。明治四十一年発行の「三浦繁昌記」の浦賀町の項には、「・・・現今は、浦賀船渠会社を唯一の顧客として商業を営み、此の会社の弛張（しちょう）興廃は町の景気に大なる影響を及ぼしている・・・」とあり、造船所の浮き沈みが、そのまま町民の一喜一憂につながっていた様子をよく言い表しています。

以後今日まで、様々な歴史の移り変わりにつれて盛衰を繰り返してきました。

この間、ここで建造した艦船は約一千隻に達します。

Machu Picchu (as for English:) Machu Picchu, Quechua: Machu Pikchu) is [2], remains of Inca Empire in the 15th century which are located in the high ridgeline root (2,430m above sea level) along the Peruvian Ulu Vamba Valley belonging to the Andes foot of a mountain (English version) [1].
