The aggregate loss increased in March 1942; 28 vessels of 159,340 tons sunk by U-boats in the Eastern Sea Frontier alone; 15 more of 92,321 tons (over half of it tanker tonnage) in the Gulf and Caribbean; 86 vessels and almost half a million gross tons for the entire Atlantic. The coastline from Norfolk to Wilmington was the scene of numerous sinkings. Submarines lay off Diamond Shoals buoy “picken’’em off’; at least three U-boats maintained patrol off Cape Hatteras lying on the bottom by day and hunting at night.
Some of the details of these sinkings, especially of the tankers, are pitiful to relate; oil scum ignited by signal flares on life preservers, then attempting to swim in a heavy viscous layer of fuel oil, men trying to swim underwater to avoid flames. A Chilean freighter was torpedoed and sunk 30 miles off Ambrose Channel, New York, and only one man survived. A tugboat and three barges, shelled by U-574, sank on the last night of March off Cape Charles and there were only two survivors.
The same night, a tanker was sunk off Cape Henry when maneuvering to pick up a pilot; on the following night, between Cape Charles and Cape Henlopen, an unarmed collier was sunk by a submarine’s gunfire at a range of about 600 yards. Her crew of 27, denied any opportunity to abandon ship, were slaughtered by machine-gun fire and only three men survived.

1万トン級の船でも、雷撃されると早ければ数分で沈んでしまう。その間に狭い船内から脱出するのは幸運に恵まれない限り、難しかったろう。沈むのに1時間弱かかった、タイタニック号のようにはいかない。
