怪人二十面相 43

　ピッポちゃんは、小林少年の手の甲こうにとまって、かわいい目をキョロキョロさせて、じっと聞いていましたが、ご主人の命令がわかったものとみえて、やがて勇ましく羽ばたきして、地下室の中を二―三度行ったり来たりすると、ツーッと窓の外へとびだしてしまいました。

Pippo listened to Kobayashi on his hand looking at him intently then it seemed like it understood the order, flapped its wings bravely. It made a few circle around the room and flew away from the window.

「ああ、よかった。十分もすれば、ピッポちゃんは、明智先生のおばさんのところへとんでいくだろう。おばさんはぼくの手紙を読んで、さぞびっくりなさるだろうなあ。でも、すぐに警視庁へ電話をかけてくださるにちがいない。それから警官がここへかけつけるまで、三十分かな？　四十分かな？　なんにしても、今から一時間のうちには、賊がつかまるんだ。そしてぼくは、この穴ぐらから出ることができるんだ。」

"Good, withing ten minutes Pippo will arrive at Master Akechi's residence and go to the madam. She will be so surprised. Still she will call the Police dapartment. Does it take 30 minutes for the police to reach here? Or 49 minutes? Anyway the thief will be caught in next one hour and I'll be able to get out of here."

　小林少年は、ピッポちゃんの消えていった空をながめながら、むちゅうになって、そんなことを考えていました。あまりむちゅうになっていたものですから、いつのまにか、天井のおとし穴のふたがあいたことを、少しも気づきませんでした。
「小林君、そんなところで、何をしているんだね。」

 Kobayashi was imagining like that watching the sky Pippo went off. He was absorbed in this idea so he didn't notice the basement's lid was open.
"Kobayashi, what are you doing there?"

　聞きおぼえのある二十面相の声が、まるで雷のように少年の耳をうちました。

The familiar voice of Twenty Faces hit him like a lightning.

　ギョッとしてそこを見あげますと、天井にポッカリあいた四角な穴から、ゆうべのままの、しらが頭の賊の顔が、さかさまになって、のぞいていたではありませんか。

Startled, he looked up to see the thief's white-haired upside-down face still in disguise of old man from the square space.

　アッ、それじゃ、ピッポちゃんのとんでいくのを、見られたんじゃないかしら。
　小林君は、思わず顔色をかえて賊の顔を見つめました。

 Oh, did he see Pippo fly away, didn't he.
Kobayashi lost color and stared at the thief.

　　少年探偵は、その建物と賊の家との関係を、よく頭に入れて、なわばしごをおりました。そして、いそいで例のカバンをひらくと、手帳と鉛筆と磁石とをとりだし、方角をたしかめながら、地図を書いてみました。すると、この建物が、戸山ヶ原の北がわ、西よりの一隅ぐうにあるということが、ハッキリとわかったのでした。ここでまた、七つ道具の中の磁石が役にたちました。

 The detective boy memorised the position of both the buildings and this hideout, then climbed down the ladder. He opened his bag to take the pencil, note and compass in a hurry, drew a map comfirming dirction. So that he realised this place is northwest side of Toyamagahara. The compass of his seven tools worked again.

　ついでに時計を見ますと、朝の六時を、少しすぎたばかりです。上の部屋がひっそりしているようすでは、二十面相はまだ熟睡しているのかもしれません。

When he looked at the watch it was just a little past six o'clock in the morning. By the silence of upstairs he guessed Twenty Faces might sleep sound yet.

「ああ、ざんねんだなあ。せっかく二十面相のかくれがをつきとめたのに、その場所がちゃんとわかっているのに、賊を捕縛ほばくすることができないなんて。」

"Oh, it's such shame. I have found where Twenty Faces' hideout and yet I can't catch him."

　小林君は小さいこぶしをにぎりしめて、くやしがりました。

He chagrined with his little fist clenching.

「ぼくのからだが、童話の仙女フェアリーみたいに小さくなって、羽がはえて、あの窓からとびだせたらなあ。そうすれば、さっそく警視庁へ知らせて、おまわりさんを案内して、二十面相をつかまえてしまうんだがなあ。」

"If my body became small like a fairy with wings and fly out from that window. Then I would report the Metropolitan police department, lead the policemen and we could catch Twenty Faces."

　彼は、そんな夢のようなことを考えて、ため息をついていましたが、ところが、そのみょうな空想がきっかけになって、ふと、すばらしい名案がうかんできたのです。

He imagined like a dream and sigh. And then that weird imagination inspired a great idea.

「なあんだ、ぼくは、ばかだなあ。そんなことわけなくできるじゃないか。ぼくにはピッポちゃんという飛行機があるじゃないか。」

"Why! I was stupid. I can do that. I have a plane, Pippo."

　それを考えると、うれしさに、顔が赤くなって、胸がドキドキおどりだすのです。

By this idea he got excited with his face blushed and his heart started pounding.

　小林君は興奮にふるえる手で、手帳に、賊の巣くつの位置と、自分が地下室に監禁されていることをしるし、その紙をちぎって、こまかくたたみました。

With his hand trembling with excitement he write down the direction of the thief's place and his imprisonment on a sheet of his note, cut off and folded it in small shape.

　それから、カバンの中の伝書バトのピッポちゃんを出して、その足にむすびつけてある通信筒の中へ、今の手帳の紙をつめこみ、しっかりとふたをしめました。

Then he pulled the carrier pigeon PIppo out of his bag and put the paper in the cylinder on its leg and closed the lid steady.

「さあ、ピッポちゃん、とうとうきみが手がらをたてるときがきたよ。しっかりするんだぜ。道草なんか食うんじゃないよ。いいかい。そら、あの窓からとびだして、早く奥さんのところへ行くんだ。」

"Now, Pippo, it's time for you to achieve a great deed. Come on, don't make a detour, okay? There, fly out from that window and go to the madam fast."

 

怪人二十面相 41

　なわばしごといっても、これはごくかんたんなもので、五メートルほどもある、長いじょうぶな一本の絹ひもに、二十センチごとに大きなむずび玉がこしらえてあって、そのむすび玉に足の指をかけて、よじのぼるしかけなのです。

The rope ladder is very simple one, it is strong, 5 meters length silk rope with knobs in every twenty centimeters. You can climb up hanging on the knobs with your tows.

　小林君は腕力ではおとなにおよびませんけれど、そういう器械体操めいたことになると、だれにもひけはとりませんでした。彼は、なんなくなわばしごをのぼって、窓の鉄ごうしにつかまることができました。

Kobayashi is not stroing like adults, still he is the best when it comes to aritistic gymnastics. He could climbed up easily and hang on the iron bar.

　ところが、そうしてしらべてみますと、失望したことには、鉄ごうしは深くコンクリートにぬりこめてあって、万能ナイフぐらいでは、とてもとりはずせないことがわかりました。

 But to his disappointment, the iron bars were concreted so deep that they couldn't be removed by his knife.

　では、窓から大声に救いをもとめてみたらどうでしょう。いや、それもほとんど見こみがないのです。窓の外は荒れはてた庭になっていて草や木がしげり、そのずっと向こうにいけがきがあって、いけがきの外は道路もない広っぱです。その広っぱへ、子どもでも遊びに来るのを待って、救いをもとめれば、もとめられるのですが、そこまで声がとどくかどうかも、うたがわしいほどです。

 Then how about shouting for help through the window? No, it was hardly hope for. Outside of the window was just desolate garden with many trees and weeds, beyond the garden's hedge was just a vast field without roads. If there were the kids coming the field to play he could scream for help but he was not sure if his voice would reach there.

　それに、そんな大きなさけび声をたてたのでは、広っぱの人に聞こえるよりも先に、二十面相に聞かれてしまいます。いけない、いけない、そんな危険なことができるものですか。

Plus, his voice can be heard by Twenty Faces before the people outside. No, no. He couldn't risk it.

　小林少年は、すっかり失望してしまいました。でも失望のなかにも、一つだけ大きな収穫がありました。といいますのは、今の今まで、この建物がいったいどこにあるのか、少しも見当がつかなかったのですが、窓をのぞいたおかげで、その位置がハッキリとわかったことです。

 Kobayashi lost hope entirely. Still he could get something from the disappointment. Until now he had no idea where it was but by seeing outside, he could tell where he was.

　読者諸君は、ただ窓をのぞいただけで、位置がわかるなんてへんだとおっしゃるかもしれません。でも、それがわかったのです。小林君はたいへん幸運だったのです。

 My readers may say that it can't be possible to tell whereabout by just looking out from the window. But he could. He was so lucky.

　窓の外、広っぱのはるかむこうに、東京にたった一ヵ所しかない、きわだって特徴のある建物が見えたのです。東京の読者諸君は、戸山ヶ原にある、大人国たいじんこくのかまぼこをいくつもならべたような、コンクリートの大きな建物をごぞんじでしょう。じつにおあつらえむきの目じるしではありませんか。

 Outside of the window, far away from the field he could see very distinctive building that was only one. My readers from Tokyo must know the huge concrete buildings in Toyamagahara which look like lined-up-Kamaboko in the giant country. It is very good landmark isn't it?

伝書バト

Carrier Pigeon

　小林少年はふと目をさますと、部屋のようすが、いつもの探偵事務所の寝室とちがっているので、びっくりしましたが、たちまちゆうべのできごとを思いだしました。「ああ、地下室に監禁されていたんだっけ。でも、地下室にしちゃあ、へんに明るいなあ。」

Kobayashi woke up and was surprised that the surrounding was different from usual bedroom in the detective agency office but soon he remembered what happened last night.
"Uh, I was imprisoned in the basement. But it's too bright for the basement."

　殺風景なコンクリートの壁や床が、ほんのりと、うす明るく見えています。地下室に日がさすはずはないのだがと、なおも見まわしていますと、ゆうべは少しも気づきませんでしたが、いっぽうの天井てんじょうに近く、明りとりの小さな窓がひらいていることがわかりました。

 He could see dim light on the bleak concrete walls and floor. There shouldin't be any sunlight in the basement, he thought and looked around to find a small window near the ceiling he didn't notice last night.

　その窓は三十センチ四ほうほどの、ごく小さいもので、そのうえ太い鉄ごうしがはめてあります。地下室の床からは、三メートル近くもある高いところですけれど、外から見れば、地面とすれすれの場所にあるのでしょう。
「はてな、あの窓から、うまく逃げだせないかしら。」

 The window was very small, 30 centimeter-square and iron-barred. It was 3 meters hight from the floor but it must be ground level from outside.
"I wonder if I could escape from that window."

 　小林君はいそいで長イスから起きあがり、窓の下に行って、明るい空を見あげました。窓にはガラスがはめてあるのですが、それがわれてしまって、大声にさけべば、外を通る人に聞こえそうにも思われるのです。

 Kobayashi stood up hurriedly and looked up the sky from near the window. The window glass was broken so if he shouted his voice might be heard.

　そこで、今まで寝ていた長イスを、窓の下へおしていって、それを踏み台に、のびあがってみましたが、それでもまだ窓へとどきません。子どもの力で重い長イスをたてにすることはできないし、ほかに踏み台にする道具とても見あたりません。

 He pushed the couch to under the window and tried to reach the window from on top of it but it was still unreachable. He could not put the very heavy couch upright nor find anything for the step-ladder.

では、小林君は、せっかく窓を発見しながら、そこから外をのぞくことも、できなかったのでしょうか。いやいや、読者諸君、ご心配にはおよびません。こういうときの用意に、なわばしごというものがあるのです。少年探偵の七つ道具は、さっそく使い道ができたわけです。

Then while Kobayashi found the window, still he couldn't even look outside? No, no, my readers, do not worry. This is the rope ladder is for. The boy detective's seven tools found the way to work.

　彼はカバンから絹ひものなわばしごをとりだし、それをのばして、カウ・ボーイの投げなわみたいにはずみをつけ、いっぽうのはしについているかぎを、窓の鉄ごうしめがけて投げあげました。

 He pulled the rope ladder out from his bag, threw the hook on the end of it to the iron-bars like a cow-boy.

　三度、四度失敗したあとで、ガチッと、手ごたえがありました。かぎはうまく一本の鉄棒にかかったのです。

After a several missing, he felt a tug on it. The hook caught one of the bars.

 

怪人二十面相 39

　地下室は十畳敷きほどの広さで、四ほうコンクリートの壁につつまれた、以前は物置きにでも使われていたらしい部屋でした。どこかに階段があるはずだと思って、さがしてみますと、大きな木のはしごが、部屋のいっぽうの天井につりあげてあることがわかりました。出入り口をふさいだだけではたりないで、階段までとりあげてしまうとは、じつに用心ぶかいやり方といわねばなりません。このちょうしでは、地下室から逃げだすことなど思いもおよばないのです。

 The room was over 18 square meter, surrounded by concrete walls and it might used to be a storage room. There must be a staircase, he searched and found a big wooden ladder was hung from the ceiling. The thief must be very wary. Shutting the exit was not enough so he took the ladder away. In this situation there is no way to think of getting out from here.

　部屋のすみに一脚きゃくのこわれかかった長イスがおかれ、その上に一枚の古毛布がまるめてあるほかには、道具らしいものは何一品ありません。まるで牢獄のような感じです。

There was nothing other than an almost broken couch with an old blanket on it in the corner of the room. It looked like a prison cell.

　小林少年は、その長イスを見て、思いあたるところがありました。
「羽柴壮二君は、きっとこの地下室に監禁されていたんだ。そして、この長イスの上でねむったにちがいない。」

 As Kobayashi saw the couch an idea occured to him.
"I bet Hashiba Souji had been cooped up in here and slept on this couch."

　そう思うと、何かなつかしい感じがして、彼は長イスに近づき、クッションをおしてみたり、毛布をひろげてみたりするのでした。

This idea comforted him somehow, he went to the couch, pushed the cushion and spread the blanket.

「じゃ、ぼくもこのベッドでひとねむりするかな。」
　大胆不敵の少年探偵は、そんなひとりごとをいって、長イスの上に、ゴロリと横になりました。

"Well, let me have a rest here."
The brave detective boy talked to himself and lay on the couch.

　万事ばんじは夜が明けてからのことです。それまでにじゅうぶん鋭気をやしなっておかねばなりません。なるほど、理くつはそのとおりですが、このおそろしい境遇にあって、のんきにひとねむりするなんて、ふつうの少年には、とてもまねのできないことでした。

Everything has to wait for the morning. Until then he has to resotre his energy. Surely it is true but it's impossible to have a sleep for an ordinary boy in this horrible situation.

「ピッポちゃん、さあ、ねむろうよ。そして、おもしろい夢でもみようよ。」
　小林少年は、ピッポちゃんのはいっているカバンを、だいじそうにだいて、やみの中に目をふさぎました。そしてまもなく、長イスの寝台の上から、すやすやと、さも安らかな少年の寝息が聞こえてくるのでした。

"Pippo, let's sleep. And have a fun dream."
In the darkness, Kobayashi closed his eyes holding the bag with Pippo in it deary. Soon there was a peaceful sound of his breathing.
