少年探偵
Young detective
青年運転手を帰すと、ただちに、主人の壮太郎氏夫妻、近藤老人、それに、学校の用務員さんに送られて、車をとばして帰ってきた早苗さんもくわわって、奥まった部屋に、善後処置の相談がひらかれました。もうぐずぐずしてはいられないのです。十時といえば、八―九時間しかありません。
After they let the young drive go Mr. and Mrs. Hashiba, Kondou, and Sanae who was brought back to home by the school janitor had a meeting in the back of the house. There was no time. They had eight or nine hours until ten o'clock.
「ほかのものならばかまわない。ダイヤなぞお金さえ出せば手にはいるのだからね。しかし、あの観世音像だけは、わしは、どうも手ばなしたくないのだ。ああいう国宝級の名作を、賊の手などにわたしては、日本の美術界のためにすまない。あの彫刻は、この家の美術室におさめてあるけど、けっしてわしの私有物ではないと思っているくらいだからね。」
"I don't care other things. I have enough money for the diamonds. But I can't relinquish that Kanzeon statue. I can't let Japan art world lost it being worth of National treasure. Although it's in my art room I consicer it not my belongings.
壮太郎氏は、さすがにわが子のことばかり考えてはいませんでした。しかし、羽柴夫人は、そうはいきません。かわいそうな壮二君のことでいっぱいなのです。
That is Hashiba, who is not only thinking about his son. But of course Mrs. Hashiba is not like that. Only she can think of was of only poor Souji.
「でも、仏像をわたすまいとすれば、あの子が、どんなめにあうかわからないじゃございませんか。いくらたいせつな美術品でも、人間の命にはかえられないとぞんじます。どうか警察などへおっしゃらないで、賊の申し出に応じてやってくださいませ。」
"But if you don't give that statue away you never know what hapen to Souji. No matter how important the art work is you have to know his life is irreplaceable. Please don't tell the police and accept his offer.
おかあさまのまぶたの裏には、どこともしれぬまっくらな地下室に、ひとりぼっちで泣きじゃくっている壮二君の姿が、まざまざとうかんでいました。今晩の十時さえ待ちどおしいのです。たったいまでも、仏像とひきかえに、早く壮二君をとりもどしてほしいのです。
It was as if she could see Souji crying all alone in the darkness not knowing where he was. She even couldn't wait for ten o'clock. She wanted take Souji back in exchange for the statue now.
「ウン、壮二をとりもどすのはむろんのことだが、しかし、ダイヤを取られたうえに、あのかけがえのない美術品まで、おめおめ賊にわたすのかと思うと、ざんねんでたまらないのだ。近藤君、何か方法はないものだろうか。」
"Yes, of course we have to take Souji back. But it's such ignominious I let him have that precious art work in addition to those diamonds. Mr. Kondo, aren't there anything we can do?"
「そうでございますね。警察に知らせたら、たちまち事があらだってしまいましょうから、賊の手紙のことは今晩十時までは、外へもれないようにしておかねばなりません。しかし、私立探偵ならば……。」
"Let me see. If we call the police it will be open case soon so we have to hold back to ten o'clock tonight. But if it was a private investigator.."
老人が、ふと一案を持ちだしました。
「ウン、私立探偵というものがあるね。しかし、個人の探偵などにこの大事件がこなせるかしらん。」
The old man give them an idea.
"Yes, there is such people. But I wonder if a private investigator can deal with this big case."
「聞くところによりますと、なんでも東京にひとり、えらい探偵がいると申すことでございますが。」
"I hear that there is a great investigator in Tokyo."
老人が首をかしげているのを見て、早苗さんが、とつぜん口をはさみました。
「おとうさま、それは明智小五郎探偵よ。あの人ならば、警察でさじを投げた事件を、いくつも解決したっていうほどの名探偵ですわ。」
Seeing the old guy tilting his head, Sanae spoke up suddenly.
"Father, it's the detective Kogorou Akechi. He is a good detevtive who resolve many cases that the police couldn't deal with.
「そうそう、その明智小五郎という人物でした。じつにえらい男だそうで、二十面相とはかっこうの取り組みでございましょうて。」
"Yes, it's Kogorou Akechi. He sounds really great and maybe it's a good match."
「ウン、その名はわしも聞いたことがある。では、その探偵をそっと呼んで、ひとつ相談してみることにしようか。専門家には、われわれに想像のおよばない名案があるかもしれん。」
"Yes, I have heard that name. Then let's call him in secret and ask some counsel. They specialists may have some idea we can't imagine."
そして、けっきょく、明智小五郎にこの事件を依頼することに話がきまったのでした。
As a result they decided to ask Kogorou Akechi this matter to resolve.
さっそく、近藤老人が、電話帳をしらべて、明智探偵の宅に電話をかけました。すると、電話口から、子どもらしい声で、こんな返事が聞こえてきました。
Soon Kondo looked up the phone book and call the residence of Detective Akechi. He heard a child voice saying like this.
「先生はいま、ある重大な事件のために、外国へ出張中ですから、いつお帰りともわかりません。しかし、先生の代理をつとめている小林という助手がおりますから、その人でよければ、すぐおうかがいいたします。」
"My master is abroad on a important business trip and I don't know when he come back. But there is an assistant Kobayashi representing him. He will come soon if you like."
「ああ、そうですか。だが、ひじょうな難事件ですからねえ。助手の方ではどうも……。」
近藤支配人がちゅうちょしていますと、先方からは、おっかぶせるように、元気のよい声がひびいてきました。
"Oh, well.. But this is very difficult case. I wonder if an assistant can.."
While the butler Kondou hesitated a vigorous voice interrupted from the other end of the line.
「助手といっても、先生におとらぬ腕ききなんです。じゅうぶんご信頼なすっていいと思います。ともかく、一度おうかがいしてみることにいたしましょう。」
"He is an assistant but very proficient and compare with our master. You can trust him, I think. Let me send him anyway."
