怪人二十面相 24

　昨夜はダイヤ六個たしかにちょうだいしました。持ちかえって、見れば見るほどみごとな宝石、家宝としてたいせつに保存します。

I got six diamonds last night certainly. As I brought them and looked at them they really are superb precious stones. I will cherish them as my treasure.

　しかし、お礼はお礼として、少しおうらみがあるのです。何者かが庭にわなをしかけておいて、ぼくの足に全治十日間の傷をおわせたことです。ぼくは損害を賠償ばいしょうしてもらう権利があります。そのためにご子息壮二君を人質ひとじちとしてつれてかえりました。

Still put the gratefulness aside I got a little bit of grudge. Someone set a trap in the garden and gave me injury which will take ten days to heal completely.

　壮二君は今、拙宅せったくのつめたい地下室にとじこめられて、暗やみの中でシクシク泣いております。壮二君こそ、あののろわしいわなをしかけた本人です。これくらいのむくいは当然ではありますまいか。

 Now Souji has been cooped up in the basement of my house and whimpering in the darkness. Souji is the one who set the cursed trap. He deserves it, doesn't he.

　ところで、損害の賠償ですが、それには、ぼくはご所蔵の観世音かんぜおん像を要求します。

So, as indemnity, I require the Kanzeon statue of yours.

　ぼくは昨日、はからずも貴家の美術室を拝見する光栄を得たのですが、そのりっぱさにおどろきいりました。中でもあの観世音像は、鎌倉期の彫刻、安阿弥あんあみの作と説明書きがありましたが、いかにも国宝にしたいほどのもの、美術ずきのぼくは、ほしくてほしくてたまりませんでした。そのとき、どうあっても、この仏像だけはちょうだいしなければならないと、かたく決心したのです。

 It was a privilege to catch a sight of your art room yesterday and I was stunned by their admirableness. Expecially the kanzeon statue made by Annami, a sculpturer in Kamakura era muste be worth of National treasure. As a art lover I wanted it so badly. At that moment I decided to have it.

　ついては、今夜正十時、ぼくの部下のもの三名が、貴家に参上しますから、だまって美術室に通していただきたいのです。彼らは観世音像だけを荷づくりして、トラックにつんで運びさる予定よていになっております。人質の壮二君は、仏像とひきかえに貴家へもどるようにはからいます。約束は二十面相の名にかけてまちがいありません。

 So, my three subordinates will be there at exact ten o'clock tonight. You will just let them in to the art room. They wiil pack only Kanzeon statue and bring it by a truck. I make the hostage Souji go back in return. I keep this promise on my honour.

　このことを警察に知らせてはなりません。また部下のトラックのあとをつけさせてはいけません。もしそういうことがあれば、壮二君は永久に帰らないものとおぼしめしください。この申し出はかならずご承諾を得るものと信じますが、念のためご承諾のせつは、今夜だけ十時まで正門をあけはなっておいてください。それを目じるしに参上さんじょうすることにいたします。

 You must not report this to Police. Or you must not follow the truck. I you did, think of Souji lost forever. I believe you accept this offer but I have to make sure. If you accept it leave the front gate open until ten o'clock tonight. I will make it the sign.

　なんという虫のよい要求でしょう。壮太郎氏はじめ、こぶしをにぎってくやしがりましたが、壮二君というかけがえのない人質をとられては、どうすることもできません。ざんねんながら、このむちゃな申し出に応ずるほかに手立てはないように思われます。

What an absurd offer. Soutarou and all others were chagrined bitterly with trembling fists. But they couldn't do anything with irreplaceable Souji being hostge of them. Alas, they had no chice but accept this unreasonable offer. 

　なお、賊にたのまれて自動車を運転してきた青年をとらえて、じゅうぶん詮議せんぎしましたけれど、彼はただ、いくらかお礼をもらってたのまれただけで、賊のことは何も知りませんでした。

 Of course they caught the the guy who drove the car and investigated but only to find him doing it for money and know nothing.
