　さて、いっぽう羽柴家をおそった、ひじょうな恐怖といいますのは、ほかならぬ「二十面相」のおそろしい予告状です。予告状の文面は、

「余がいかなる人物であるかは、貴下きかも新聞紙上にてご承知であろう。

 

You must know who I am from the newspapers.

 

　貴下は、かつてロマノフ王家おうけの宝冠ほうかんをかざりし大だいダイヤモンド六個を、貴家の家宝として、珍蔵ちんぞうせられると確聞かくぶんする。

 

I know you own those six diamonds once decorated on the crowns of Romanov as your family treasure.

 

　余はこのたび、右六個のダイヤモンドを、貴下より無償にてゆずりうける決心をした。近日中にちょうだいに参上するつもりである。

 

I have decided to be given those six diamonds now. I will go to get them.

　正確な日時はおってご通知する。
　ずいぶんご用心なさるがよかろう。」

というので、おわりに「二十面相」と署名してありました。

I will notify you exact day and time soon. Be careful enough.

And there was a sign saying "Twenty Faces" at the end.

　そのダイヤモンドというのは、ロシアの帝政没落ていせいぼつらくののち、ある白系はっけいロシア人が、旧ロマノフ家の宝冠を手に入れて、かざりの宝石だけをとりはずし、それを、中国商人に売りわたしたのが、まわりまわって、日本の羽柴氏に買いとられたもので、価あたいにして二百万円という、貴重な宝物ほうもつでした。

After the downfall of imperial government Rossian bought the Romanov crown, took out those decorative jem and them sold to Chinese marchant, then they were bought by Mr. Hashiba in Japan. Those diamonds are real precious jewl worth two million yen.

　その六個の宝石は、げんに、壮太郎氏の書斎の金庫の中におさまっているのですが、怪盗はそのありかまで、ちゃんと知りぬいているような文面です。

The six precious stones are really kept in the vault of the Soutarou's study. It was as if the thief new where they are crealy.

　その予告状をうけとると、主人の壮太郎氏は、さすがに顔色もかえませんでしたが、夫人をはじめ、お嬢さんも、召使いなどまでが、ふるえあがってしまいました。

When the master of the family, Soujirou recieved the warning letter he didn't budge but his wife, daughter, and servants were shaken up.

　ことに羽柴家の支配人近藤こんどう老人は、主家の一大事とばかりに、さわぎたてて、警察へ出頭しゅっとうして、保護をねがうやら、あたらしく、猛犬を買いいれるやら、あらゆる手段をめぐらして、賊の襲来しゅうらいにそなえました。

Especially the old buttler Kondo made it a huge incident, prepared for the attack well enough asking the poloce some protections and buying an aggressive dog.

 

独特の言い回しの文章ですね。それを活かしたいところですが。。現に出版されてる日本語訳を読んでみたいが、読まない;;

鉄のわな

Iron trap

　麻布あざぶの、とあるやしき町に、百メートル四方もあるような大邸宅があります。
　四メートルぐらいもありそうな、高い高いコンクリート塀べいが、ズーッと、目もはるかにつづいています。いかめしい鉄のとびらの門をはいると、大きなソテツが、ドッカリと植うわっていて、そのしげった葉の向こうに、りっぱな玄関が見えています。

Massive Japanese buildings and two story western buildings with yellow beautiful bricks are there at right angle to each other. There is a vast splendid garden behind.

 This is a big business leader, Hashiba Soutarou's mansion.

　羽柴家には、今、ひじょうな喜びと、ひじょうな恐怖とが、織りまざるようにして、おそいかかっていました。

The Hashibas were surprised by a great joy and greay terror interlacingly.

　喜びというのは、今から十年以前に家出をした、長男の壮一そういち君が、南洋ボルネオ島から、おとうさんにおわびをするために、日本へ帰ってくることでした。

The joy was that more than ten years long lost oldest son, Souichi is coming back from Southern island Borneo to apologize to his father.

　壮一君は生来せいらいの冒険児で、中学校を卒業すると、学友とふたりで、南洋の新天地に渡航し、何か壮快な事業をおこしたいと願ったのですが、父の壮太郎氏は、がんとしてそれをゆるさなかったので、とうとう、むだんで家をとびだし、小さな帆船はんせんに便乗して、南洋にわたったのでした。

Souich was born to be an adventurer. When he graduated a junor high school he hoped to go southern country and start a good buisiness with his friend. Still, with his father never giving him a permission, he just ran away from home, got a travel to southern islands on a small sailing ship.

　それから十年間、壮一君からはまったくなんのたよりもなく、ゆくえさえわからなかったのですが、つい三ヵ月ほどまえ、とつぜん、ボルネオ島のサンダカンから手紙をよこして、やっと一人まえの男になったから、おとうさまにおわびに帰りたい、といってきたのです。

Ten years past since then without any letter from Souich and they didn't know where he had been. But suddenly, three months ago there was a letter form Sandakan saying that he'd got success finaly and would like to come home and apologize to his father.

　壮一君は現在では、サンダカン付近に大きなゴム植林をいとなんでいて、手紙には、そのゴム林の写真と、壮一君の最近の写真とが、同封してありました。もう三十歳です。鼻下びかにきどったひげをはやして、りっぱな大人になっていました。

Now Souich is running a big gum tree plantation he said and there were some photos of the plantation and recent Souich himself. He is now 30 years old wears mannered bear under his nose, old enough to be an adult.

　おとうさまも、おかあさまも、妹の早苗さなえさんも、まだ小学生の弟の壮二そうじ君も、大喜びでした。下関しものせきで船をおりて、飛行機で帰ってくるというので、その日が待ちどおしくてしかたがありません。

　His fater, mother, little sister Sanae and young son, school boy Souji are excited. He was going to leave the ship at Shimonoseki and will fly back, so they can't wait for him.

 

間違いや、もっといい書き方があると思いますので、教えてください。

とにかくこんな感じで、どう訳すか、少しずつ見ていただけたらと思います。

　ただ、せめてものしあわせは、この盗賊は、宝石だとか、美術品だとか、美しくてめずらしくて、ひじょうに高価な品物をぬすむばかりで、現金にはあまり興味を持たないようですし、それに、人を傷つけたり殺したりする、ざんこくなふるまいは、一度もしたことがありません。血がきらいなのです。

Still, fortunately this thief only has stolen the beautiful, rare and extremely expensive things like jewels or arts, doesn't seem like interested in cash. And he has never hurt, killed people or done anything cruel. He hates blood.

　しかし、いくら血がきらいだからといって、悪いことをするやつのことですから、自分の身があぶないとなれば、それをのがれるためには、何をするかわかったものではありません。東京中の人が「二十面相」のうわさばかりしているというのも、じつは、こわくてしかたがないからです。

However even though he didn't like blood this is a villain, no one could tell what he would do if he were cornered. That's why all people in Tokyo were afraid of him and talking about this Fiend with Twenty Faces.

　ことに、日本にいくつという貴重な品物を持っている富豪などは、ふるえあがってこわがっていました。今までのようすで見ますと、いくら警察へたのんでも、ふせぎようのない、おそろしい賊なのですから。

Especially those rich people with very rare precious things were trembling from the fear. So far even if the police was asked they couldn't do anything.

　この「二十面相」には、一つのみょうなくせがありました。何かこれという貴重な品物をねらいますと、かならず前もって、いついく日にはそれをちょうだいに参上するという、予告状を送ることです。賊ながらも、不公平なたたかいはしたくないと心がけているのかもしれません。それともまた、いくら用心しても、ちゃんと取ってみせるぞ、おれの腕まえは、こんなものだと、ほこりたいのかもしれません。いずれにしても、大胆不敵だいたんふてき、傍若無人ぼうじゃくぶじんの怪盗かいとうといわねばなりません。

This "Fiend with Twenty Faces" had wired oddity. When he decided to get something precious, he always sends warnings. Even as a villain he might not like unfair work. Or maybe he is proud of his capability that he can steal anything he wants how careful his victims are. Either way he must be audacious, impudent thief.

　このお話は、そういう出没自在しゅつぼつじざい、神変しんぺんふかしぎの怪賊と、日本一の名探偵めいたんてい明智小五郎あけちこごろうとの、力と力、知恵と知恵、火花をちらす、一騎きうちの大闘争だいとうそうの物語です。

This story is about the fight using the power and power, wisdom and wisdom between this misterious phantomlike thief and the very best detective, Kogorou Akechi.

怪人二十面相１

そのころ、東京中の町という町、家という家では、ふたり以上の人が顔をあわせさえすれば、まるでお天気のあいさつでもするように、怪人「二十面相」のうわさをしていました。
「二十面相」というのは、毎日毎日、新聞記事をにぎわしている、ふしぎな盗賊とうぞくのあだ名です。その賊は二十のまったくちがった顔を持っているといわれていました。つまり、変装へんそうがとびきりじょうずなのです。

江戸川乱歩の怪人二十面相です。

In those days when someone met another all they talked about was the Fiend with Twenty Faces like the weather topic.

"The Fiend with Twenty Faces" was a nickname of a misterious theif whici was on the paper everyday. They said this fiend had twenty different faces. In short, he was super good at disguise.

　どんなに明るい場所で、どんなに近よってながめても、少しも変装とはわからない、まるでちがった人に見えるのだそうです。老人にも若者にも、富豪ふごうにも乞食こじきにも、学者にも無頼漢ぶらいかんにも、いや、女にさえも、まったくその人になりきってしまうことができるといいます。

No matter how bright it was, no matter how close you looked, it was impossible to tell he was disguised and looked completely different person. He could be old, young, rich, poor, scholar or rascal, even a woman.

　では、その賊のほんとうの年はいくつで、どんな顔をしているのかというと、それは、だれひとり見たことがありません。二十種もの顔を持っているけれど、そのうちの、どれがほんとうの顔なのだか、だれも知らない。いや、賊自身でも、ほんとうの顔をわすれてしまっているのかもしれません。それほど、たえずちがった顔、ちがった姿で、人の前にあらわれるのです。

Still no one knew how old he was or what he looked like. He had never been seen. No one knew which one is his own look out of all those twenty faces. Why, even he himself might have forgotten his own face. He showed up in front of people with a different face, a different facade that much.

　そういう変装の天才みたいな賊だものですから、警察でもこまってしまいました。いったい、どの顔を目あてに捜索したらいいのか、まるで見当がつかないからです。

His being well disguised troubled the police. Because they had no idea what they had to look for.

チャレンジです。どこまでできるかな。です。

急行

今日はちょっと出かけてきました。

それで気づいたこと、急行、快速列車は

express train, fast train と辞書には載ってたけど、

現実に行動しないとわからないものだね。
