　森の入り口に、散歩の帰りらしい十人ほどの、小学生たちが、立ちどまって、このようすをながめていました。

At the edge of the woods, there were around ten elementary school boys were watching it.

　二十面相は走りながら、じゃまっけな小僧どもがいるわいと思いましたが、森へ逃げこむには、そこを通らぬわけにはいきません。

Twenty Faces thought they were in his way but he had to go through them to get in the woods.

　なあに、たかのしれた子どもたち、おれのおそろしい顔を見たら、おそれをなして逃げだすにきまっている。もし逃げなかったら、蹴けちらして通るまでだ。

They are just children. I can scare thm off with a furious expression. If they didn't, I will just kick them off.

　賊はとっさに思案して、かまわず小学生のむれに向かって突進しました。

The thief considered it and plunged into the crowd of boys.

　ところが、二十面相のおもわくはガラリとはずれて、小学生たちは、逃げだすどころか、ワッとさけんで、賊のほうへとびかかってきたではありませんか。

But he was wrong. The boys did not run away but rushed toward him.

　読者諸君は、もうおわかりでしょう。この小学生たちは、小林芳雄君を団長にいただく、あの少年探偵団でありました。少年たちはもう長いあいだ、博物館のまわりを歩きまわって、何かのときの手助けをしようと、手ぐすねひいて待ちかまえていたのでした。

My readers must have know already. These boys were that detective boys led by Yoshio Kobayashi. They had been walking around the museum, waiting for the cance they could do something to help.

　まず先頭の小林少年が二十面相を目がけて、鉄砲玉のようにとびついていきました。つづいて羽柴壮二少年、つぎはだれ、つぎはだれと、みるみる、賊の上に折りかさなって、両手の不自由な相手を、たちまちそこへころがしてしまいました。

First, Kobayashi darted at Twenty Faces like a bullet. Next, Souji Hashiba, and next, they all piled on themselves on the thief and defeated.

　さすがの二十面相も、いよいよ運のつきでした。
「ああ、ありがとう、きみたちは勇敢だねえ。」

Even Twenty Faces got his luch run out.
"Oh, thank you. You boys are so brave."

　かけつけてきた中村係長が少年たちにお礼をいって、部下の警官と力をあわせ、こんどこそとり逃がさぬように、賊をひったてて、ちょうどそこへやってきた警察自動車のほうへつれていきました。

Just arrived Nakamura thanked them and with some helps of other policemen he took the thief to the poice car.

　そのとき、門内から、黒い背広のひとりの紳士があらわれました。さわぎを知って、かけだしてきた明智探偵です。小林少年は目早く、先生のぶじな姿を見つけますと、驚喜きょうきのさけび声をたてて、そのそばへかけよりました。

At that time there was a gentleman in black suits came out from the gate. He heard the tumult and ran to here. Kobayashi found him and dashed to him with a cry of joy.

「おお、小林君。」
　明智探偵も、思わず少年の名を呼んで、両手をひろげ、かけだしてきた小林君を、その中にだきしめました。美しい、ほこらしい光景でした。この、うらやましいほど親密な先生と弟子とは、力をあわせて、ついに怪盗逮捕の目的をたっしたのです。そして、おたがいのぶじを喜び、苦労をねぎらいあっているのです。

"Oh, Mr. Kobayashi."
Akechi called his name, opened his arms and hugged the boy. It was beautiful, proud scene. With their great friendship, the master and his apprentice achieved an aim catching the thief. And they are happy with their being safe and sound, appreciating eath other.

　立ちならぶ警官たちも、この美しい光景にうたれて、にこやかに、しかし、しんみりした気持で、ふたりのようすをながめていました。少年探偵団の十人の小学生は、もうがまんができませんでした。だれが音頭おんどをとるともなく、期きせずしてみんなの両手が、高く空にあがりました。そして一同、かわいらしい声をそろえて、くりかえしくりかえしさけぶのでした。
「明智先生、ばんざーい。」
「小林団長、ばんざーい。」

All policemen were lined up, impressed by this beautiful scene and watching them quietly. The ten other boys couldn't help anymore. Who knows which one started, all the hands were raised in the air. Everyone shouted repeatedly with their cute voices.
"Hurray, Mater Akechi!"
"Hurray, Leader Kobayashi!"

　もし、明智があらわれるようなことがおこらなかったら、館長自身がちょうど午後四時に盗難に気づいたふうをよそおって、みんなをアッといわせるもくろみだったにちがいありません。いかにも二十面相らしい冒険ではありませんか。でも、その冒険がすぎて、ついに、とりかえしのつかない失策をえんじてしまったのでした。

If there weren't Akechi showing up, he would have played the director realized the burglar to surprisee everyone. That's adventurous Twenty Faces. As a result, the adventure went too far and he commited a irreparable blunder.

　さて明智探偵は、キッと警視総監のほうに向きなおって、
「閣下、では怪盗二十面相をおひきわたしいたします。」
と、しかつめらしくいって、一礼しました。

Akechi faced to the chief of M.P.,
"Sir, I now turn Twenty Faces in."
said rigidly and bowed.

　一同あまりに意外な場面に、ただもうあっけにとられて、名探偵のすばらしい手がらをほめたたえることもわすれて、身動きもせず立ちすくんでいましたが、やがて、ハッと気をとりなおした中村捜査係長は、ツカツカと二十面相のそばへ進みより、用意の捕縄をとりだしたかとみますと、みごとな手ぎわで、たちまち賊をうしろ手にいましめてしまいました。

All people were too astonished, forgetting praise the detective's superb achievement and just be there. Then the chief Nakamura suddenly collected himself, got close to Twenty Faces and tle his hand on his back with his ropes swiftly.

「明智君、ありがとう。きみのおかげで、ぼくはうらみかさなる二十面相に、こんどこそ、ほんとうになわをかけることができた。こんなうれしいことはないよ。」
　中村係長の目には、感謝の涙が光っていました。

"Mr. Akechi, thank you. Because of you I could bind him at last. I can't be happier."
On his eyes, tears were shining.

「それでは、ぼくはこいつを連れていって、表にいる警官諸君を喜ばせてやりましょう……。さあ、二十面相、立つんだ。」

"Well, I bring him, make all those policemen outside happy. Now, Twenty Faces, get up."

　係長はうなだれた怪盗をひきたてて、一同に会釈しますと、かたわらにたたずんでいた、さいぜんの警官とともに、いそいそと階段をおりていくのでした。

The chief led the drooping thief, bowed everyone and went down the stairs happily with the other policeman.

　博物館の表門には、十数名の警官がむらがっていました。今しも建物の正面入り口から、二十面相のなわじりをとった係長があらわれたのを見ますと、先をあらそって、そのそばへかけよりました。

There were several dozens of policemen are at the front gate. When they saw the chief detective leading Twenty Faces, they rushed toward them.

「諸君、喜んでくれたまえ。明智君の尽力じんりょくで、とうとうこいつをつかまえたぞ。これが二十面相の首領だ。」
　係長がほこらしげに報告しますと、警官たちのあいだに、ドッと、ときの声があがりました。

"Everyone, I have a great news. We finally caught Twenty Faces by the help of Mr. Akechi. This is Twnty Faces."
When the chief declared proudly there was a loud rallying cry from the policeman.

　二十面相はみじめでした。さすがの怪盗もいよいよ運のつきと観念したのか、いつものずうずうしい笑顔を見せる力もなく、さも神妙にうなだれたまま、顔をあげる元気さえありません。

Twenty Faces was miserable. It seemed even Twenty Faces gave in, he neither showed that arrogant smile, nor had energy to lift his head, drooping meekly.

　それから、一同、賊をまんなかに行列をつくって、表門を出ました。門の外は公園の森のような木立ちです。その木立ちの向こうに、二台の警察自動車が見えます。

All of them lined up, Twenty Faces in the middle, went out from the front gate. There was woods like a park. Beyond the woods, there were two police cars to be seen.

「おい、だれかあの車を一台、ここへ呼んでくれたまえ。」
　係長の命令に、ひとりの警官が、警棒をにぎってかけだしました。一同の視線がそのあとを追って、はるかの自動車にそそがれます。

"Hey, someone, call that car here."
One of the plicemen got his order, started running toward the cars. All remained people's eyes were seeing those cars.

　警官たちは賊の神妙なようすに安心しきっていたのです。中村係長も、つい自動車のほうへ気をとられていました。

The policemen had gotten confident because of the docile thief. The chief Nakamura also was distracted.

　いっせつな、ふしぎに人々の目が賊をはなれたのです。賊にとっては絶好の機会でした。

For a split second, all people took their eyes off the thief. It was a marvelous chance for the thief.

　二十面相は、歯を食いしばって、満身の力をこめて、中村係長のにぎっていたなわじりを、パッとふりはなしました。

Twenty Faces clenched his jaw and with his full effort, shook himself free of the rope Nakamura was grasping.

「ウム、待てッ。」
　係長がさけんで立ちなおったときには、賊はもう十メートルほど向こうを、矢のように走っていました。うしろ手にしばられたままの奇妙な姿が、今にもころがりそうなかっこうで森の中へとんでいきます。

"Uh, wait!"
When the chief recovered himself and shouted, the thief was already running 10 meters away. The weird figure with his hand tied up on his back was running into the woods in a clumsy way.

「なぞみたいないい方はよしたまえ。ここには、われわれが知っている人ばかりじゃないか。それともきみは、この部屋の中に、二十面相がかくれているとでもいうのかね。」

"Don't riddle us. We know all peope here. Or do you mean Twenty Faces is hiding in this room?"

「まあ、そうだよ。ひとつ、そのしょうこをお目にかけようか……。どなたか、たびたびごめんどうですが、下の応接間に四人のお客さまが待たせてあるんですが、その人たちをここへ呼んでくださいませんか。」
　明智は、またまた意外なことをいいだすのです。

"Yes, I do. I show you an evidence. Anyone, I'm sorry to trouble you, but I have 4 guests in the parlor downstairs waiting for me, please bring them here."
Akechi started talking one more thing unexpected.

　館員のひとりが、急いで下へおりていきました。そして、待つほどもなく、階段に大ぜいの足音がして、四人のお客さまという人々が、一同の前に立ちあらわれました。

One of the museum staffs hurried to downstairs and soon with many footsteps, 4 guests Akechi was talking about appreared bofore them.

　それを見ますと、一座の人たちは、あまりのおどろきに、「アッ。」とさけび声をたてないではいられませんでした。

Seeing them, all people couldn't help but gasp in surprise.

　まず四人の先頭に立つ白髪白髯の老紳士をごらんなさい。それは、まぎれもない北小路文学博士だったではありませんか。

Look at the man standing ahead with white hair and beard. He was surely Doctor Kitaouji himself.

　つづく三人は、いずれも博物館員で、きのうの夕方からゆくえ不明になっていた人びとです。

The other three were the museum staffs who had been missing from last evening.

「この方々かたがたは、ぼくが二十面相のかくれがから救いだしてきたのですよ。」
　明智が説明しました。

"I rescued these people from Twenty Faces' nest."
Akechi explained it.

　しかし、これはまあ、どうしたというのでしょう。博物館長の北小路博士がふたりになったではありませんか。

But what is happening? There is two of the director of the museum, doctor Kitakouji now.

　ひとりは今、階下からあがってきた北小路博士、もうひとりは、さいぜんからズッと明智に手をとられていた北小路博士。

One of them was Doctor Kitaouji came up from downstairs just now, the other was Doctor Kitaouji whose hand had been taken by Akechi all along.

　服装から顔形かおかたちまで寸分ちがわない、ふたりの老博士が、顔と顔を見あわせて、にらみあいました。

With their same clothe and visage, two old doctors were glaring each other.

「みなさん、二十面相が、どんなに変装の名人かということが、おわかりになりましたか。」

"Everyone, have you gotten how well Twenty Faces can disguise himself?"

　明智探偵はさけぶやいなや、いままで親切らしくにぎっていた老人の手を、いきなりうしろにねじあげて、床の上に組みふせたかと思うと、白髪のかつらと、白いつけひげとを、なんなくむしりとってしまいました。その下からあらわれたのは、黒々とした髪の毛と、若々しいなめらかな顔でした。いうまでもなく、これこそ正真正銘の二十面相その人でありました。

The moment he cried out he twisted the old man's arm and held him down on the floor, took the white wig and false beard easily. Jet black hair and young face showed up beneath them. Needless to say, this person was authentic Twenty Faces.

 「ハハハ……、二十面相君、ご苦労さまだったねえ。さいぜんからきみはずいぶん苦しかっただろう。目の前できみの秘密が、みるみるばくろしていくのを、じっとがまんして、何くわぬ顔できいていなければならなかったのだからね。

"Ha ha ha. Thanks for your troube. It had been painful for you. You had to bear that your secret had been revealed in front of you and listen to it nonchalantly.

逃げようにも、この大ぜいの前では逃げだすわけにもいかない。いや、それよりも、ぼくの手が、手錠てじょうのかわりに、きみの手首をにぎりつづけていたんだからね。手首がしびれやしなかったかい。まあ、かんべんしたまえ、ぼくは少しきみをいじめすぎたかもしれないね。」

Even if you wanted to escape you couldn't run away before these people's eye. No, above all, I had been grasping your arm as your hand-cuff. Doesn't your list get numb? Excuse me, I might have tortured you too much."

　明智は、無言のままうなだれている二十面相を、さもあわれむように見おろしながら、皮肉ななぐさめのことばをかけました。

Akechi gave a word of ironic comfort looking down at him who was drooping his head in silence.

　それにしても、館長に化けた二十面相は、なぜもっと早く逃げださなかったのでしょう。ゆうべのうちに、目的ははたしてしまったのですから、三人の替え玉の館員といっしょに、サッサと引きあげてしまえば、こんなはずかしい目に会わなくてもすんだのでしょうに。

Be that as it may, why Twenty Faces in the doctor's figure hadn't escape earlier. Since he had accomplished his aim last night he could walk out from here with three fake staffs so that he didn't have to be ashamed like this.

　しかし、読者諸君、そこが二十面相なのです。逃げだしもしないで、ずうずうしく居のこっていたところが、いかにも二十面相らしいやり口なのです。彼は、警察の人たちがにせ物の美術品にびっくりするところが見物したかったのです。

But, my readers, that is Twenty Faces. Without escaping he remained here audaciously, that's his way. He wanted to enjoy the policemen get surprised finding the counterfeits.

　ぼくは地下室にるす番をしているあいだに、酒、さかなの用意をしておきました。そして帰ってきた部下と、ぼくといっしょに残っていた部下と、ぜんぶのものに祝杯をすすめました。

I prepared drinks and sidedishes while I was cooped up in the basement and offered them as a toast to those subordinates who came back and other ones left behind with me.

そこで部下たちは、大事業の成功したうれしさに、むちゅうになって酒さかもりをはじめたのですが、やがて、三十分ほどもしますと、ひとりたおれ、ふたりたおれ、ついにはのこらず、気をうしなってたおれてしまいました。

They started drinking bout exultantly, tasting the sweets of success. After a half an hour or so, they started to faint one by one, all of them in the end.

　なぜかとおっしゃるのですか。わかっているではありませんか。ぼくは賊の薬品室から麻酔剤をとりだして、あらかじめその酒の中へまぜておいたのです。

Are you asking why? It's obvious, isn't it. I have taken some anaesthetic from his medecine storage to put in their drinks beforehand.

　それから、ぼくはひとりそこをぬけだして、付近の警察署へかけつけ、事情を話して、二十面相の部下の逮捕と、地下室にかくしてあるぜんぶの盗難品の保管をおねがいしました。

Then I sneaked out to go nearby police station, explained everything, asked to arrest Twenty Faces' subordinates and reposit all those stolen items.

　お喜びください。盗難品は完全にとりもどすことができました。国立博物館の美術品も、あの気のどくな日下部老人の美術城の宝物も、そのほか、二十面相が今までにぬすみためた、すべての品物は、すっかりもとの所有者の手に返ります。」

Congratulations. We got all stolen items back. The art from National Museum and the poor old Kusakabe's art castle, and every other things that Twenty Faces had stolen before, all of them can go back to their original owners."

　明智の長い説明を、人々は酔ったように聞きほれていました。ああ、名探偵はその名にそむきませんでした。彼は人々の前に広言したとおり、たったひとりの力で、賊の巣くつをつきとめ、すべての盗難品をとりかえし、あまたの悪人をとらえたのです。

All people were listening to Akechi's description as if they got mesmerized. Oh, the great detective didn't disgrace his honour. He found the thief's den, took all stolen items back, caught many criminals as he had promised.

「明智君、よくやった。よくやった。わしはこれまで、少しきみを見あやまっていたようだ。わしからあつくお礼を申します。」
　警視総監は、いきなり名探偵のそばへよって、その左手をにぎりました。

"Mr. Akechi, well done. Well done. I might have misjudged you. I'd like express my gratitude."
The chief of Metropolitan Police came close to the detective and took his left hand.

　なぜ左手をにぎったのでしょう。それは明智の右手がふさがっていたからです。その右手は、いまだに老博物館長の手と、しっかりにぎりあわされていたからです。みょうですね。明智はどうしてそんなに老博士の手ばかりにぎっているのでしょう。

Why he had to to take his left hand. It was because Akechi's right hand was occupied. That hand was still holding the old director's hand. It's odd. Why Akechi was holding the old doctor's hand?

「で、二十面相のやつも、その麻酔薬を飲んだのかね。きみはさいぜんから部下のことばかりいって、一度も二十面相の名を出さなかったが、まさか首領をとりにがしたのではあるまいね。」
　中村捜査係長が、ふとそれに気づいて、心配らしくたずねました。

"But Twenty Faces got that anaesthetic? You haven't talked about Twenty Faces but his subordinates. You must not fail to catch him."
The chief Nakamura realized it and asked anxiously.

「いや、二十面相は地下室へは、帰ってこなかったよ。しかし、ぼくは、あいつもちゃんととらえている。」
　明智はにこにこと、例の人をひきつける笑い顔で答えました。

"Twenty Faces didn't come back to the basement. Still I have him all right."
Akechi answered with his usual attracting smile.

「どこにいるんだ。いったいどこでとらえたんだ。」
　中村警部が、性急せいきゅうにたずねました。ほかの人たちも、総監をはじめ、じっと名探偵の顔を見つめて、返事を待ちかまえています。

"Where is he? Where did you catch him?"
The chief Nakamura asked urgently. All people including the chief of M.P. were waiting for his answer staring at him.

「ここでつかまえたのさ。」
　明智は落ちつきはらって答えました。

"I caught him here."
Akechi answered calmly.

「ここで？　じゃあ、今はどこにいるんだ。」
「ここにいるよ。」
　ああ、明智は何をいおうとしているのでしょう。

"Here? Then where is he now?"
"He is here."
Oh, what is Akechi talking about?

「ぼくは二十面相のことをいっているんだぜ。」
　警部が、けげん顔で聞きかえしました。
「ぼくも二十面相のことをいっているのさ。」
　明智が、おうむがえしに答えました。

"I'm talking about Twenty Faces."
The chief of M.P. asked back dubiously.
"I also am talking about Twenty Faces."
Akechi repeated the chief's word.

怪盗捕縛

Arrestment of the thief

「だが、明智君。」
　警視総監は、説明が終わるのを待ちかまえていたように、明智探偵にたずねました。

"Still, Mr. Akechi."
The chief of Metropolitan Police asked as if he could hardly wait for him finish the explanation.

「きみはまるで、きみ自身が二十面相ででもあるように、美術品盗奪の順序をくわしく説明されたが、それはみんな、きみの想像なのかね。それとも、何かたしかなこんきょでもあるのかね。」

"You can detail everything how this larceny has been executed as you are the Twnty Faces himiself. Is it your imagination, or dose it have any basis?"

 「もちろん、想像ではありません。ぼくはこの耳で、二十面相の部下から、いっさいの秘密を聞き知ったのです。今、聞いてきたばかりなのです。」

"Of course it's not my imagination. I heard all of the secrets from his subordinate. I just heard it."

「え、え、なんだって？　きみは二十面相の部下に会ったのか。いったい、どこで？　どうして？」
　さすがの警視総監も、この不意うちには、どぎもをぬかれてしまいました。

"What? Have you met Twenty Faces' subordinate? But when? Why?"
Even the chief of the M.P was petrified by this sudden revelation.

「二十面相のかくれがで会いました。総監閣下、あなたは、ぼくが二十面相のために誘かいされたことをごぞんじでしょう。ぼくの家庭でも世間でもそう考え、新聞もそう書いておりました。しかし、あれは、じつを申しますと、ぼくの計略にすぎなかったのです。ぼくは誘かいなんかされませんでした。かえって賊の味方になって、ある人物の誘かいを手つだってやったほどです。

"I met him in Twenty Faces' den. Chief, you know I had been abducted by Twenty Faces. My family and all people thought so, the newspaper gave that report. But the truth is that it's just my plan. I wasn't abducted. I had became one of them and helped to abduct someone.

　昨年のことですが、ぼくはある日ひとりのふしぎな弟子入り志願者の訪問を受けました。ぼくはその男を見て、ひじょうにおどろきました。目の前に大きな鏡が立ったのではないかと怪あやしんだほどです。

Last year, I received a strange visitor who wanted to become my apprentice. I was so surprised to see him. I even wondered a mirror stood in front of me.

なぜかと申しますと、その弟子入り志願者は、背かっこうから、顔つきから、頭の毛のちぢれかたまで、このぼくと寸分ちがわないくらいよく似ていたからです。つまり、その男はぼくの影武者として、何かの場合のぼくの替え玉として、やとってほしいというのです。

Because this applicant resembled me. The physique, height, visage, even curled hair, evety part of him was similar to mine. He said he wanted me to hire him as my double.

　ぼくは、だれにも知らせず、その男をやといいれて、あるところへ住まわせておきましたが、それがこんど役にたったのです。

I hired him secretly and let him live in some place. And it served this occasion.

　ぼくはあの日外出して、その男のかくれがへ行き、すっかり服装をとりかえて、ぼくになりすましたその男を、先にぼくの事務所へ帰らせ、しばらくしてから、ぼく自身は浮浪人赤井寅三というものに化けて、明智事務所をたずね、ポーチのところで、自分の替え玉とちょっと格闘をして見せたのです。

On that day, I went to his secret house, exchanged our clothe, sent him in my figure to my office. After a while I became a street person, Torazou Akai, went to Akechi's office to get a fight with my doble to show off.

　賊の部下がそのようすを見て、すっかりぼくを信用しました。そして、それほど明智にうらみがあるなら、二十面相の部下になれとすすめてくれたのです。そういうわけで、ぼくは、ぼくの替え玉を誘かいするお手つだいをしたうえ、とうとう賊の巣くつにはいることができました。

One of his subordiates complitely trusted me seeing it. And he advised me to become Twenty Faces' follower. Like this I fell in the place to help abducting my double and then finally I could get into the thief's den.

　しかし、二十面相のやつは、なかなかゆだんがなくて、仲間入りをしたその日から、ぼくを家の中の仕事ばかりに使い、一歩も外へ出してくれませんでした。むろん、博物館の美術品をぬすみだす手段など、ぼくには少しもうちあけてくれなかったのです。

But Twety Face was very wary. From that day he just used me for his mundane works, not letting me out. Naturally, he didn't spill any scheme of stealing the museum art.

　そして、とうとう、きょうになってしまいました。ぼくはある決心をして、午後になるのを待ちかまえていました。すると、午後二時ごろ、賊のかくれがの地下室の入り口があいて、人夫の服装をしたたくさんの部下のものが、手に手に貴重な美術品をかかえて、ドカドカとおりてきました。むろん博物館の盗難品です。

And the day came at last. I got some decision and just waited for the afternoon. Then at around two o'clock, the door of his basement opened and many of his surbordinates in wrecker's clothe came in holding the precious art works. Of course they were stolen goods.
