Back story:
I was at LAX to pick up my father.
He was coming back from a business trip to Japan.
It was 11:30 AM and passengers from Japan Airlines flight 69 was just coming out of customs.
note: JAL 069 is now a KIX to LAX flight from mid 2014
While I waited, I recognized someone who was also on the same flight coming out to arrival.
Since I noticed the dude, I instinctively raised my hand in greeting
but quickly realized that while I recognized him, he would definitely not recognize me.
The guitar god, Edward "Eddie" Van Halen was standing straight in front of me, smiling.
He waved back and I also noticed that he was with his new bride, Valerie Bertinelli and his band mate and older brother, Alex Van Halen holding hands with Valeri Kendall.
I followed Eddie to the curb just outside of the arrival terminal and when he stopped, I asked him for an autograph.
As I did not have a pen on me, Eddie pulled out his pen and sign the only piece of parchment I had, a brown paper bag.
After he finished and passed me the paper bag, he pulled out his hand which I shook.
We chatted for what I believe as 8 or 9 minutes and while I don't remember the whole conversation,
we talked about Japan (I believe he was coming back from a belated Honeymoon in Japan), Kyoto (I think he mentioned he visited there), and Gene Simmons (helped Van Halen with their demo before being signed by a major label.
A van pulled up to the curb and Alex, Valeri, and Valerie jumped in but Eddie actually took my paper back back and asked Alex and Valerie if they would also like to sign for me (which they declined).
Eddie smiled and said "sorry kid, only me" and jumped in the van.
He gave me one final wave and a smile and they were off.
I was in shock for a few hours and completely forgot about my dad which I left waiting in the arrival area.
