Case study comparing and contrasting LDS growth trends in Hong Kong and Singapore. The Church reports seven times as many members in Hong Kong than in Singapore (24,425 vs. 3,337) yet the estimated member activity rate for the Church in Hong Kong is less than half of that in Singapore (12-16% vs. 35%). Differing mission policies, level of member-missionary engagement, and government legislation appear the primary causes for differing LDS Church growth trends in Hong Kong and Singapore notwithstanding many cultural similarities.

Graph displaying changes in the ratio of LDS membership to the general population in Hong Kong since 1975. Population and church membership growth rates have been commensurate for two decades. One in 289 in Hong Kong were LDS in 2010, but the estimated member activity rate is 14%.
Quick-baptism practices, the strong influence of secularism and materialism on local culture, and saturation of LDS congregations with full-time missionaries appear the primary causes for stagnant growth over the past two decades.(access 4/3/2012)
