Summary in Enlgish for friends from overseas:
“Hinamatsuri” or March Doll’s Festival:
A lovely ceremony is held on March 3. It is called “Hinamatsuri” or March Doll’s Festival for girls or “Momo-no Sekku” whose literal meanings is “Festival of Peach Blossoms”.
This festival has its origin away back about 1,000 years ago. Girls display many beautifully dressed dolls on the shelf in the shape of stairs. These dolls are copied after the costumes of the people of the ancient court.

On the top-stair of the shelf with a red cloth spread over on it, two dolls dressed like Emperor and Empress are settled. On the next stair three ladies in waiting, the five court musicians come next, and guards at the bottom-stair.
“Bonbori” (or a floor lamp of paper), “Shirozake” (very sweet white sake made from rice),”Hishimochi”(a diamond-shaped rice cake) and peach blossoms are also put in front of the shelf.
When I was a child, on this day girls used to wear beautiful kimono with long sleeves. We spend our nice spring evening with eating, singing, sipping Shirozake and playing games.
Skyrocketing inflation has affected the price of the dolls these days, so dolls are very expensive and the change of the lifestyle, I am not quite sure how many people can enjoy the festival to the full.
We continue having a feeling to think of a traditional festival, people enjoy Hinamatsuri by their way.
