英語でマーケティングを勉強している"BizCom" の先週の例会後の懇親会で仲間のＫＴさんがサクランボの実に付いている柄の部分の名称は何かという話がでました。（ＫＴさんは旅行会社の繁忙期にたまに添乗員を頼まれるそうです） 葉の同様な部分は葉柄と言う様な記憶がありますが、実柄は聞いた事がありません。 英語だったら何と言うとの話にもなったのですが、"stem" とか "stalk" 位しか出てきません。 植物好きの私としては気になっていたのですが、インターネットでも調べようがありません。
ところが昨夜寝る前に本棚を見ると、昔米国で買ってその後ほとんど中を見たことがない英絵辞典(Visual Dictionary）を持っていることに気が付きました。早速、Vegetable Kingdomのページを見てみるとありました！Blue berryの絵に柄が付いていて "pedicel" とありました。 次に "pedicel" を英英辞書で確認しました。
OneLook Quick Definition を引くと "a small stalk bearing a single flower of an inflorescence; an ultimate division of a common peduncle" の説明があり、困ったことに "inflorescence" とか "peduncle" の難しい語があるのでそれらの意味も引きました。

"pedicel" のDictionary.comでの説明は：
a. a small stalk.
b. an ultimate division of a common peduncle.

なるほど、実になる前の花の時からその部分は "pedicel" と呼ばれるのですね。 "pedicel" が実際に使われている英文を探してみました。
