『日本書紀』履中天皇 4
當是時、倭直吾子籠、素好仲皇子、預知其謀、密聚精兵數百於攪食栗林、爲仲皇子將拒太子。時太子、不知兵塞而出山行數里、兵衆多塞、不得進行。
乃遣使者、問曰「誰人也。」對曰「倭直吾子籠也。」便還問使者曰「誰使焉。」曰「皇太子之使。」時吾子籠、憚其軍衆多在、乃謂使者曰「傳聞、皇太子有非常之事。將助以備兵待之。」然太子疑其心欲殺、則吾子籠愕之、獻己妹日之媛、仍請赦死罪。乃免之、其倭直等貢采女、蓋始于此時歟。

At this time, Yamato no Atai Agoko, who was close to Prince Nakatsumiko, foresaw their plot and secretly gathered several hundred elite soldiers in the chestnut grove of Kaihami, intending to capture the Crown Prince on behalf of Prince Nakatsumiko. The Crown Prince, unaware of the obstructing soldiers, left the mountain and traveled several miles, but could not proceed further due to the numerous blocking soldiers.
He then sent a messenger asking "Who are you?", to which they replied "We are Yamato no Agata Agoko." The messenger then asked in return, "Who sent you?" They said, "The Crown Prince's messenger." Agoko, apprehensive of their large military force, told the messenger, "Word has it that the Crown Prince faces an extraordinary situation. We have prepared soldiers to assist him and await his arrival." However, the Crown Prince, suspecting Agoko intended to kill him, caused Agoko to become flustered. Agoko offered his sister, Hino Hime, and begged for a pardon. The Crown Prince pardoned him. It seems the practice of court ladies being recruited from provincial families began at this time.

その頃、倭直(やまとのあたい)の吾子籠(あごこ)は、皇太子を拘束しようと企てる仲皇子(なかつみこ)と親しい仲でした。吾子籠(あごこ)はその陰謀を察して、攪食(かきはみ)の栗林に数百人の精鋭部隊を密かに集めた。これは仲皇子のために皇太子を捕らえるためであった。
一方、皇太子はその兵士の待ち伏せを知らず、山を下って数里進んでおられましたが、道は兵士で塞がれており、先に進めなくなりました。そこで使者を送り「おまえは誰か」と尋ねたところ「倭直(やまとのあたい)の吾子籠(あごこ)でございます」と答えた。使者がさらに「誰の命令か」と問い返すと「皇太子の使いでございます」と言うのでした。
吾子籠は多勢の兵力に恐れをなし、使者に「皇太子に異常なことがあると聞きまして、兵を備えてお待ちしておりました」と言いました。しかし皇太子は吾子籠の心をお疑いになり殺そうとされた。吾子籠は驚愕し、妹の日野媛(ひのひめ)を差し出し、死罪の赦免を哀願されました。皇太子はこれをお許しになりました。倭直らが宮中に采女(うねめ)を奉る習慣は、この時に始まったようです。
