『日本書紀』允恭天皇 8
七年冬十二月壬戌朔、讌于新室。天皇親之撫琴、皇后起儛、儛既終而不言禮事。當時風俗、於宴會者儛者儛終則自對座長曰「奉娘子也。」時天皇謂皇后曰「何失常禮也。」皇后惶之、復起儛、儛竟言「奉娘子。」天皇卽問皇后曰「所奉娘子者誰也、欲知姓字。」皇后不獲已而奏言「妾弟、名弟姬焉。」弟姬、容姿絶妙無比、其艶色徹衣而晃之、是以、時人號曰衣通郎姬也。天皇之志存于衣通郎姬、故强皇后而令進、皇后知之、不輙言禮事。爰天皇歡喜、則明日遣使者喚弟姬。
時弟姬、隨母以在於近江坂田、弟姬畏皇后之情而不參向。又重七喚、猶固辭以不至、於是天皇不悅而復勅一舍人中臣烏賦津使主曰「皇后所進之娘子弟姬、喚而不來。汝自往之、召將弟姬以來、必敦賞矣。」
≪英訳≫
On the first day of December in the seventh year, there was a banquet to celebrate the completion of a new palace. The Emperor played the koto himself, and the Empress stood and danced. When her dance was over, the Empress did not say the customary words of thanks. According to the customs of the time, when someone finished dancing at a banquet, they were supposed to say, "I offer a young woman" to the head of the banquet. The Emperor asked the Empress, "Why did you not follow the usual etiquette?"
The Empress respectfully stood up again and danced. After she finished, she said, "I offer a young woman." The Emperor then asked the Empress, "Who is the young woman you are offering? I would like to know her name." The Empress, having no choice, replied, "It is my younger sister, her name is Otohime."
Otohime was exceptionally beautiful, and no one could compare to her. Her radiant beauty shone through her clothes. People of the time called her Sotōshi no Iratsume (Lady Through-the-Clothes). The Emperor was captivated by her and insisted that the Empress offer her. The Empress was reluctant. The next day, the Emperor sent a messenger to summon Otohime. At that time, Otohime was in Sakata, Ōmi, with her mother. Understanding the Empress’s feelings, Otohime did not come. Despite being summoned seven times, she firmly refused and did not come.
The Emperor was displeased and commanded one of his attendants, Ikatsu no Mikoto from the Nakatomi clan, saying, "The young woman Otohime, offered by the Empress, does not come when called. You must go and bring her here. I will reward you generously."
≪この英文の和訳≫
(在位)七年の十二月一日に、新しい宮殿の完成を祝う宴会がありました。天皇は自ら琴を弾かれ、皇后は立って舞を披露されました。舞が終わった後、皇后は感謝の言葉を言われませんでした。当時の習慣では、宴会で舞い終わった人は、その場の主に「娘子（じょうし）を奉ります」と言うことになっていました。天皇は皇后に「なぜいつもの礼儀を守らないのか」と尋ねられました。
皇后は改めて立ち上がり、もう一度舞を踊られました。終わった後、「娘子を奉ります」と言われました。天皇は皇后に「奉る娘子は誰か、その名前を知りたい」と尋ねられました。皇后は仕方なく「私の妹、名前は弟姫（おとひめ）です」と答えました。
弟姫は非常に美しく、その美しさは誰にも劣りませんでした。彼女の美しさは衣服を通して輝いていました。当時の人々は彼女を「衣通郎姫（そとおしのいらつめ）」と呼んでいました。天皇は彼女に心を奪われ、皇后に彼女を奉るよう強く求められました。皇后は気が進みませんでした。翌日、天皇は使者を送り、弟姫を呼びました。その時、弟姫は母と共に近江（おうみ）の坂田にいました。弟姫は皇后の気持ちを察し、参上しませんでした。天皇が七度も召し上げましたが、弟姫は固く辞退して参りませんでした。
天皇は不満に思い、舎人の中臣（なかとみ）の烏賊津使主（いかつのおみ）に命じて「皇后が奉る弟姫が呼んでも来ない。お前は行って弟姫を連れて来い。必ず厚く報いる」と言われました。
