『日本書紀』 黄泉の国 2
伊弉諾尊、既還、乃追悔之曰「吾、前到於不須也凶目汚穢之處。故、當滌去吾身之濁穢。」則往、至筑紫日向小戸橘之檍原而秡除焉、遂將盪滌身之所汚、乃興言曰「上瀬是太疾、下瀬是太弱。」便濯之於中瀬也、因以生神、號曰八十枉津日神。次將矯其枉而生神、號曰神直日神、次大直日神。又沈濯於海底、因以生神、號曰底津少童命、次底筒男命。又潛濯於潮中、因以生神、號曰表中津少童命、次中筒男命。又浮濯於潮上、因以生神、號曰表津少童命、次表筒男命。凡有九神矣。其底筒男命・中筒男命・表筒男命、是卽住吉大神矣。底津少童命・中津少童命・表津少童命、是阿曇連等所祭神矣。
然後、洗左眼、因以生神、號曰天照大神。復洗右眼、因以生神、號曰月讀尊。復洗鼻、因以生神、號曰素戔嗚尊。凡三神矣。已而、伊弉諾尊、勅任三子曰「天照大神者、可以治高天原也。月讀尊者、可以治滄海原潮之八百重也。素戔嗚尊者、可以治天下也。」是時、素戔嗚尊、年已長矣、復生八握鬚髯、雖然不治天下、常以啼泣恚恨。故、伊弉諾尊問之曰「汝、何故恆啼如此耶。」對曰「吾欲從母於根國、只爲泣耳。」伊弉諾尊惡之曰「可以任情行矣。」乃逐之。
≪英訳≫
Izanagi-no-Mikoto, upon his return, regretted, saying, “I have visited a place filled with impurity and filth. Therefore, I must cleanse myself of this defilement.” He then went to the Otohime Tachibana of Sunakoku in Tsukushi and purified himself. He discarded the impurities and declared, “The upper stream is too fast, the lower stream is too weak.” He purified himself in the middle stream and from it, the deity was born, named the Deity of Eighty Breaches of Sunakoku. Next, he corrected his breaches and another deity was born, named the Deity of Straight Sun. Following this, the Deity of Great Straight Sun was born.
He then submerged himself in the deep sea, and from it, a deity was born, named the Deity of Bottom Young Boy. Next was the Deity of Middle Young Boy and the Deity of Upper Young Boy, all born from their respective locations in the sea. In total, there were nine deities. The Deity of Bottom Young Boy, Middle Young Boy, and Upper Young Boy were the principal deities of Sukuna-bikona and others.
After that, he washed his left eye, and from it, a deity was born, named Amaterasu Omikami (the Sun Goddess). He washed his right eye, and from it, a deity was born, named Tsukiyomi-no-Mikoto (the Moon Reader). He then washed his nose, and from it, a deity was born, named Susanoo-no-Mikoto (the Deity of Storms). In total, there were three deities. Izanagi-no-Mikoto then issued a decree to his three offspring, saying, “Amaterasu Omikami can rule the High Plain of Heaven. Tsukiyomi-no-Mikoto can control the eight-hundred-league ebb and flow of the Wondrous Sea-Plain. Susanoo-no-Mikoto can govern the land.”
At that time, Susanoo-no-Mikoto was already advanced in age, and though he did not govern the land, he often wailed in sorrow. Izanagi-no-Mikoto inquired, “Why do you constantly weep like this?” Susanoo-no-Mikoto replied, “I desire to follow our mother to the Root Land; I weep for this reason alone.” Izanagi-no-Mikoto disliked this and said, “You may do as you please,” and thus, he banished him.
≪この英文の和訳≫
伊弉諾尊（いざなぎのみこと）は、帰還した後、悔いを抱きました。「私は汚れと不浄な場所に足を踏み入れてしまいました。したがって、この汚れを身から洗い流さねばなりません」と述べました。そして、筑紫の須那国の日向小戸橘の浜へと向かい、そこで身を清めました。彼はその汚れを捨て去り、「上流は速すぎ、下流は弱すぎる」と語りました。彼は中流で身を清め、そこから神が誕生し、その神を八十枉津日神（やそわまたつひのかみ）と名づけました。その後、彼は自身の浮かれた行いを正し、別の神、神直日神（かみなおひのかみ）が誕生しました。
その後、彼は深海に身を沈め、そこから底津少童命神（しもつかわごむすびのかみ）が誕生しました。次に中筒男命神（なかつつむおのみこと）と表筒男命神（うわつつむおのみこと）が誕生しました。これらすべての神々はそれぞれ海の中から誕生しました。合計で九つの神が存在しました。底筒男命神、中筒男命神、表筒男命神は、宿禰やその他の主神々の主要な神でした。
その後、伊弉諾尊は左の目を洗うと、そこから天照大神（あまてらすおおみかみ）が誕生しました。右の目を洗うと、そこから月読尊（つきよみのみこと）が誕生しました。そして、鼻を洗うと、そこから素戔嗚尊（すさのおのみこと）が誕生しました。合せて三柱の神が現れました。伊弉諾尊はその後、三人の子供たちに命じました。「天照大神は高天原を支配できる。月読尊は滄海原潮の八百重を制御できる。素戔嗚尊は天下を統治できる」と述べました。
その時、素戔嗚尊は既に年老いており、土地を支配することはありませんでしたが、彼はしばしば悲しみの中で泣いていました。伊弉諾尊は尋ねました。「どうしてそんなに泣き続けるのですか？」素戔嗚尊は答えました。「私は母に従い、根の国に行きたいのです。だから泣いているのです。」伊弉諾尊はこれを嫌い、「好きにしてもいい」と言い、彼を追放しました。
