Sembikiya was founded in 1834 when Benzo, a samurai from Senbiki Village in Musashi Province, opened a "cheap fruit shop" in Fukiyacho, Edo. Initially dealing in fruits and vegetables, it gradually evolved into a fruit specialty store. In 1864, the second-generation Bunzo took over, becoming a purveyor to the Tokugawa shogunate and shifting towards a luxury market. During the third-generation Daijiro, the store moved to Nihonbashi Honcho, adopting a Western-style building and focusing on importing foreign fruits and improving domestic fruit quality.
